The Borghese Gallery opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 19:00, with last admission at 17:45, per the Rome tourism board, and the gallery is closed on Mondays. Entry is by pre-booked two-hour slot, which changes how the Borghese Gallery opening hours work in practice. This guide covers the opening hours, the ticket rules, the best time to go, how to get there and what to know at the door. If you still need a ticket, my comparison of Borghese Gallery tickets lists all 10 options with prices.

Google Maps hours for the gallery itself were not in my data, so the Borghese Gallery opening hours below come from the Rome tourism board and the Gebart ticketing page, both of which agree. Today, Saturday 7 November 2026, the gallery is open under these hours.

Day Hours
Monday Closed
Tuesday 9:00 to 19:00
Wednesday 9:00 to 19:00
Thursday 9:00 to 19:00
Friday 9:00 to 19:00
Saturday 9:00 to 19:00
Sunday 9:00 to 19:00

Per Gebart, the ticket office opens at 8:30 and closes one hour before the museum. Last admission is 17:45, which is the final entry slot and the real end of the Borghese Gallery opening hours for new visitors. Because that slot is the last one of the day, it is also the cheapest on the official page and a shorter visit, so it suits people who prefer a quick look to a full tour. The pages I read did not list holiday changes to the Borghese Gallery opening hours, so check the official site before you plan around 25 December or 1 January.

Villa Borghese Gallery Hours and Timed Entry

The Villa Borghese gallery hours are not the same thing as the time you can walk in, because the gallery runs on timed slots, and the opening hours of the Borghese Gallery only set the outer window. According to Gebart, each visit lasts two hours, each slot is capped at 180 people and buying the ticket in advance is obligatory. The page’s list of entry times reads as one slot every hour from 9:00 to 17:00, plus the final 17:45 entry, but I would read the times on the booking page itself before you commit to a day. The practical effect is that your ticket fixes the hour you enter, and if you are late the reseller listings say you may not be let in.

Two reseller listings are explicit about this. Loving Rome asks you to arrive in front of the main entrance 15 minutes before the activity starts, and says late arrivals will neither be accommodated nor refunded. That is a reseller rule, not an official one, but it is a good reason to be early.

The Borghese Gallery entrance fee on the Gebart page is 18 euros for a full ticket, made of 16 euros for the ticket and a 2 euro reservation fee. The 17:45 entry costs 13 euros. Reduced tickets cost 2 euros, which is only the reservation fee, and free tickets cost 0 euros plus the same fee. Reduced and free visitors must show proof of entitlement, or the ticket is cancelled. Per the same page, entry is free on the first Sunday of every month, with the reservation fee still due, and the ticket cannot be refunded, cancelled or changed.

For a guide, an audio guide or a host who hands you the ticket, the GetYourGuide products run from $39 to $71, and all ten allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The Borghese Gallery opening hours apply to all of them, and I compare them on the Borghese Gallery tickets page, and the cheapest and most reviewed options are at the top of it.

“Our tour guide, Dimitri, was fantastic! The gallery was phenomenal and we thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Highly recommend!!” – GetYourGuide review

A Borghese Gallery visit takes about two hours, because that is the length of the official slot per Gebart. The listings agree: most guided tours on GetYourGuide last 2 hours, the City Wonders tour with the gardens runs 2.5 hours, and the flexible ticket-and-audio-guide products give ranges of 1 to 3 hours. The 17:45 entry is shorter than two hours, since the gallery closes at 19:00.

Within the Borghese Gallery opening hours, there is time for a full visit: Wikipedia describes the gallery as twenty rooms across two floors, which is compact enough that two hours is a sensible visit. If you want the gardens as well, add time before or after, since the gallery sits in the Villa Borghese park.

The best time to visit the Borghese Gallery within its opening hours is a morning slot, and I can base that on the official numbers and the reviews, not on crowd data, because the official pages publish none. Every slot is capped at 180 people, so the gallery cannot become as crowded as a site with open entry. One reviewer wrote that entry is limited every two hours, so there is no crowd and you can study pieces, and another reviewer complained that a 5:30 pm slot did not allow the full time given to earlier visitors. The shorter 17:45 entry confirms that late slots give less time.

Weather does not change the Borghese Gallery opening hours and matters less here than at an outdoor sight, since the collection is indoors, but the gardens are outdoors. Open-Meteo’s 2025 record for Rome gives the following.

Month Sunrise Sunset Sunshine hours Rainy days
January 07:34 17:03 6.4 11
April 06:29 19:50 10.6 12
June 05:34 20:46 14.0 3
July 05:48 20:43 13.7 4
October 07:22 18:28 9.4 9
December 07:30 16:39 6.9 8

The record shows June and July as the driest, with 3 and 4 rainy days, and March as the wettest of the year at 15. Source: Open-Meteo historical weather API. If you plan a walk in the park around your visit, a spring or autumn morning gives you daylight on both sides of the slot.

The gallery’s address is Piazzale del Museo Borghese, 5, Rome, inside the Villa Borghese park, per the Rome tourism board. The nearest metro stations in my Google Maps data are Spagna, Barberini and Flaminio. I measured the walk from the gallery to each as a straight line and multiplied by 1.3 at 4.8 km/h, so these are estimates and the real path through the park may differ.

Station Estimated walk
Spagna about 18 minutes
Barberini about 19 minutes
Flaminio about 22 minutes
Repubblica about 22 minutes
Termini about 26 minutes

For bus, tram and metro routes, use the operator’s journey planner at ATAC Roma, because I did not verify a line number for this stop. The Spanish Steps are about 20 minutes on foot, so a visit pairs well with the district around Piazza di Spagna. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before your slot, since the park adds walking time that the map distance does not show.

Entrances and Meeting Points

The Borghese Gallery opening hours start at the door, so it helps to know exactly where you meet your host or guide.

Visitors enter at the front of the villa, on the square in front of the building. The tour and ticket listings place their meeting points there: City Wonders and Doooing meet you in front of the gallery, Crown Tours’ host stands by the Fontana dei Mascheroni, the drinking-water fountain facing the square, and Loving Rome staff hold a flag at the main entrance. Some listings say the meeting point depends on the option you select, so read the confirmation message. The meeting point is a reseller arrangement, so the official ticket holder simply goes to the entrance at the slot time.

The listings suggest it is, with a caveat about the booking. The guided tours I compared are rated 4.7 to 4.8 from 2,276 to 2,892 reviews, and the cheapest way in is $39 with escorted entry and an audio guide. The official slot is about two hours, which keeps the visit short. One reviewer found it definitely worth it, though another resented paying for the audio guide and the escorted entrance when tickets can be bought directly. I’d say yes if you love Bernini and Caravaggio, and book a slot within the Borghese Gallery opening hours early. See the Borghese Gallery tours for a guide.

Several tickets include one. The $39 listing has an audio guide with a live guide as an option, and the $43 skip-the-line listing has a digital audio guide, rated 4.6 from 2,759 reviews. The $54 listing with a downloadable app is rated 4.3 from 4,423 reviews, but its description says the audio guide must be bought on site for 5 euros per person, and a reviewer found no Portuguese option. Read each listing’s wording before you pay, and keep to your slot in the Borghese Gallery opening hours.

I did not find a dress code on the pages I read, and none of the listings states one, so check galleriaborghese.cultura.gov.it before you go. The rule I do have is about bags: since 12 May 2024, per Gebart, bags of any size must be checked. A two-hour slot in a gallery with strict timing suggests comfortable shoes, but that is my advice, not a rule.

What to Know Before You Go

Bags are the rule most visitors miss, and it applies throughout the Borghese Gallery opening hours. Gebart states that since 12 May 2024 bags of any size must be checked, along with backpacks, strollers, umbrellas and selfie sticks. The Rome tourism board lists a cloakroom, an audio guide service, a bookshop and a restaurant on site. One GetYourGuide reviewer wrote that small bags were allowed inside, which conflicts with the official wording, so go light.

I did not find a dress code on the pages I read, so check the official website, galleriaborghese.cultura.gov.it, for it and for any closed rooms. A reviewer of one ticket wrote that some rooms were closed for restoration before the Jubilee, which is a reminder that individual rooms can close. Allow two hours inside the Borghese Gallery opening hours, and a little more if you add the park.

Which Ticket to Book

Before you pick a ticket, check that its slot falls inside the Borghese Gallery opening hours and not in the shortened final entry.

If you want a single recommendation from my comparison of every ticket, it is the Crown Tours small-group tour at $55, which scored 4.8 stars from 2,276 reviews. It includes the skip-the-line entry ticket and a guide, which matters when slots are capped at 180 people. The full list is on my page for every Borghese Gallery ticket I compared, and the home page has the other attractions I have covered.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Borghese Gallery opening hours?

The Rome tourism board lists the gallery open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 19:00, with last admission at 17:45. The gallery is closed on Mondays. Entry is by timed slot, so your ticket sets the time you walk in, not the opening time. Check the official site for holiday changes before you travel.

Is the Borghese Gallery closed on Mondays?

Yes. Both the Rome tourism board page and the Gebart ticketing page give Monday as the weekly closing day. I did not find a list of holiday closures on the pages I read, so check the official site for 25 December, 1 January and similar dates.

How long does a visit to the Borghese Gallery take?

A visit is a timed slot of two hours, according to Gebart, except for the 17:45 entry, which is shorter. The guided tours on GetYourGuide last about 2 hours and the City Wonders tour with the gardens lasts 2.5 hours, so I would plan for around two hours inside.

Is the Borghese Gallery free on any day?

Per Gebart, entry is free on the first Sunday of every month, though the 2 euro reservation fee still applies and booking in advance is still obligatory. Because slots are capped at 180 people, I would not count on a free-day slot being available at short notice.

Can I take a bag into the Borghese Gallery?

Gebart states that since 12 May 2024 bags of any size must be left in the cloakroom, together with backpacks, strollers, umbrellas and selfie sticks. One GetYourGuide reviewer wrote that small bags were allowed inside, but I would follow the official wording and carry only what fits in your pockets.
