Skip-the-Line Rome Passes Tickets – Official Roma Pass, 45 Museums & Unlimited Public Transport

My pick among the Rome city pass options is none for most first-timers: for a three-day plan with six paid sights, single tickets came to $133 against $155 for the Rome City Pass, $162 for the Turbopass and $166 for the Omnia pass. The one pass I would consider is the official Roma Pass, 38 euros for 48 hours or 62.90 euros for 72 hours per Turismo Roma, if you ride the metro and bus a lot. The most reviewed card is the Omnia pass, 3.7 stars from 4,907 reviews.

I looked at ten GetYourGuide listings that call themselves a pass. Four of them are a real Rome city pass that bundles several attractions or transport: the Omnia Vatican and Rome Pass, the Touristation Rome City Pass, the Turbopass all-inclusive pass and the official Roma Pass. The other six are single-site or single-area tickets with “pass” in the title: two Roman Forum Super Pass listings, the Forum and Palatine SuperSites Pass, the National Roman Museum Pass, the late-booking Colosseum card and the Colosseum and SUPER Pass. I keep them in the table below for completeness, but I treat them as tickets, because none includes transport or more than one area of the city. For plain entry tickets, my Rome attraction tickets page is the better starting point.

What a Rome City Pass Costs Against Single Tickets

The honest test of any Rome city pass is the arithmetic, so here is one realistic three-day plan priced with the cheapest single ticket on my attraction pages. Day one is Ancient Rome and the Pantheon: the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill entry with an audio guide at $25 (see Colosseum tickets) and the Pantheon entry at $8 (see Pantheon tickets). Day two is Vatican City and the river: the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel skip-the-line ticket at $32 (Vatican Museums tickets), St. Peter’s Basilica reserved entry at $9 (St. Peter’s Basilica tickets) and Castel Sant’Angelo at $20 (Castel Sant’Angelo tickets). Day three is the Borghese Gallery at $39 (Borghese Gallery tickets).

Plan Cost Sum
Single tickets, six sights 25 + 8 + 32 + 9 + 20 + 39 $133
Rome City Pass plus the three sights it does not cover 155 + 8 + 20 + 39 $222
Turbopass (two days) plus Borghese Gallery 162 + 39 $201
Omnia pass plus the sights it does not name not priced, see below n/a

The Rome City Pass covers the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine entry, the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s, which are $66 as single tickets (25 + 32 + 9). The pass costs $155, so $89 of that price buys the transport pass or bus ticket, the escort and the assisted entrances. The ATAC 72-hour ticket is 22 euros on the transport operator’s price list, and the 24-hour ticket is 8.50 euros, so the transport alone does not explain the gap. What you are paying for is convenience: fixed slots arranged for you, a desk to go to and nothing to book separately.

The Turbopass is the Rome city pass with the most entries, five of which I can price: the Colosseum bundle, the Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s, the Pantheon and Castel Sant’Angelo come to $94 as single tickets (25 + 32 + 9 + 8 + 20). The $162 pass is $68 above that, and the difference buys a 48-hour bus ticket, public transport and a long tail of entries such as Ostia Antica Archaeological Park and the wax museum. I would only buy it if you know you will use several of those extras in two days.

Rome City Pass Options Reviewed

Official Roma Pass: The Only One I Would Consider

The Roma Pass is the city’s own card, and Turismo Roma prices it at 38 euros for 48 hours and 62.90 euros for 72 hours, with public transport and the P.Stop toilets included. The page speaks of more than 100 attractions on the list, and the official site is romapass.it. The GetYourGuide listing says the card gives free admission to 1 or 2 museums or archaeological sites of your choice, subject to availability, and discounts on the rest. It starts at $45, and it is non-refundable.

“It was great. We used metro a lot and Roma pass was a great choice for that!” – GetYourGuide review

Its 3.2 rating is the lowest in the table, and reviewers explain why. One says the pass saves money and also warns that you queue for the Colosseum security check for at least a few hours; another could not find the public toilets the pass is meant to open. A third praises the included bus rides when their feet were tired. My read is that, as a Rome city pass, it works as a transport card with two free entries attached, and it does not replace booked slots.

We could not find public toilets which we can use with Roma Pass. Otherwise it was good to use it.
— GetYourGuide reviewer

The sums are thin for most plans. If the two free entries were the Colosseum bundle ($25 as a single ticket) and a second site near $20, you would get back about $45 of entries plus 22 euros of transport against the 62.90 euros the 72-hour card costs. That is break-even at best, and it leaves out the Vatican, which I did not find in the listing.

Rome City Pass by Touristation: Best for Fixed Plans

The Touristation Rome city pass is the one I would pick if I wanted the big three booked for me. It lists Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill access, a skip-the-line ticket for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, reserved entrance to St. Peter’s Basilica with an audio guide app, and either an unlimited transport pass or a 3-hour hop-on hop-off ticket. It is $155, rated 4.1 from 1,636 reviews, and non-refundable.

“The tours were very well spaced out and planned with our days in Rome” – GetYourGuide review

The listing is explicit about what it leaves out: the Vatican audio guide, the St. Peter’s dome ticket and any live-guided tour of the Colosseum. Reviewers like the way the days are spaced and say it works with two or more days in Rome, and one warns that the skip-the-line was still busy in August. The meeting point for the voucher is the Touristation office at Piazza d’Aracoeli 16 near Piazza Venezia, so allow time for that first stop.

I would recommend only picking this if you have 2+ days in Rome. Lots of walking and too much to jam into one day. Otherwise, a great value!

Turbopass: A Lot of Entries, Mixed Reviews

The Turbopass reads like a full diary: Vatican Museums, Colosseum, Forum and Palatine, a 48-hour bus tour, transport, St. Peter’s assisted entry, the Pantheon, Castel Sant’Angelo and about a dozen smaller entries, plus a guided walking tour and a bike tour. It is $162 for two days, rated 3.6 from 101 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

“Es hat alles sehr gut geklappt. Leider waren die Wartezeiten bei gewissen Aktivitäten immer noch sehr lang.” – GetYourGuide review

The reviews are the weak point. One reviewer says it was hard to use tickets on a phone and that arriving a few minutes late to a prior meeting place lost the booking. A German reviewer concludes single tickets would have been clearly cheaper, but that the pass saved waiting time because everything was pre-booked. Some sites still need on-site validation, which costs time.

Hard to use getting tickets in a phone. Some had a prior meeting place and if you were a few minutes late you loose your tickets.

Omnia Vatican and Rome Pass: Biggest Review Count

The Omnia pass bundles the Omnia Card and the Roma Pass with unlimited public transport, an open-top bus ticket, an audio guide app and attraction discounts, for $166 over three days and 3.7 stars from 4,907 reviews. It cancels free up to 24 hours before. The listing names no skip-the-line entries, and it says plainly that activities outside the cards cost extra, so I can’t set it against single tickets the way I did for the others. Set it against the Roma Pass alone, which is the card inside this Rome city pass.

“Desiree was fantastic, brilliant tour leader. Very engaging and knowledgeable. Would happily go on another tour with Desiree” – GetYourGuide review

Reviewers praise the value and the way the cards made getting around easy, and one says the Vatican day was a waste of time and would have been better spent on a day trip. Redemption is at an ORP collection desk, for example near St. Peter’s, open Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm and closed on Sundays and holidays, so a Sunday arrival needs a plan.

When a Rome City Pass Is Not Worth It

A Rome city pass is a poor buy when your plan is built around the Vatican and the Colosseum alone. Those two sights have their own tickets, and for them I would book singles from Vatican Museums tickets and Colosseum tickets and keep the day flexible. A pass is also weak if you will walk, because the historic centre is compact, and the ATAC 24-hour ticket at 8.50 euros covers the days you do need a bus.

Free days change the sums too. The official Colosseum hours page lists the first Sunday of each month as a free day, with 25 April, 2 June and 4 November as further free dates, and the Vatican Museums page opens the museums free on the last Sunday of the month from 9 am to 2 pm. On those days a Rome city pass adds nothing for those sights, and I list the rest in my guide to free attractions in Rome.

The National Roman Museum Pass and the Roman Forum Super Pass are different: they are cheap, narrow tickets. The museum pass costs $33 for three sites over seven days, rated 4.5 from 87 reviews, and one reviewer liked picking the visits at their own pace. The Roman Forum Super Pass costs $25 and includes the Forum, Palatine Hill and extra rooms such as the House of Livia, but not the Colosseum, per the listing. The same area is covered in more detail on Roman Forum tickets and Palatine Hill tickets.

How I’d Choose

Frequently asked questions

Is a Rome city pass worth it?

Not on price alone. For a three-day plan with six paid sights, single tickets from my attraction pages came to $133, while the Rome City Pass costs $155 and the Omnia pass $166. A pass earns its cost only if you also want the bundled transport or bus, or pre-booked slots handled for you.

How much is the Roma Pass?

The official Roma Pass is 38 euros for 48 hours and 62.90 euros for 72 hours, per Turismo Roma. The GetYourGuide listing for the official card starts at $45 and lets you pick 48 or 72 hours at checkout, and it is non-refundable.

Do the Rome passes include the Vatican Museums?

Two of them do. The Touristation Rome City Pass and the Turbopass both list a pre-booked skip-the-line ticket for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. The Roma Pass listing does not name the Vatican, so I would not count on it there.

Does the Roma Pass include public transport?

Yes. The Roma Pass includes the city's public transport network, per Turismo Roma and the GetYourGuide listing, and the listing adds free use of the P.Stop public toilets. A separate 72-hour ATAC ticket costs 22 euros, so that is the value to set against it.

Do Rome city passes let you skip the line?

Only partly. The Touristation and Turbopass bundles pre-book the Vatican and Colosseum entries, but reviewers still report busy queues in August and extra validation steps. A Roma Pass reviewer says to expect a security-check queue at the Colosseum.

Which pass is best for two days in Rome?

For two days the choices are the Turbopass at $162 for 48 hours or the Roma Pass at 38 euros for 48 hours. I would take the Roma Pass if you plan one or two paid sites and plenty of transport, and single tickets if you plan the Vatican and the Colosseum.

Can I cancel a Rome pass?

It depends on the listing. The Roma Pass and Touristation Rome City Pass are non-refundable, while the Omnia pass and the Turbopass cancel free up to 24 hours before. Check the activation rules before you buy a card with a fixed validity.

Are the Roman Forum Super Pass and National Roman Museum Pass city passes?

No. The Roman Forum Super Pass is a site ticket for the Forum and Palatine area, and the National Roman Museum Pass covers three museum sites. Both are good value for what they cover, but neither includes transport or the major sights elsewhere.
