British Museum Tickets – 2h British Museum Guided Tour with Priority Entrance

General entry to the British Museum is free, so the British Museum tickets you can buy are guided tours that include a priority entry slot. The cheapest is a $7 express tour from Vox City Walks (3.9 stars, 254 reviews). The most-reviewed British Museum ticket is the $39 Best Tours London guided tour: 4.9 stars from 1,715 reviews. Free timed slots are booked on britishmuseum.org. For most first visits I’d book that $39 tour.

I compared all 10 British Museum tickets and tours on GetYourGuide. None is a plain entry ticket, because there is nothing to buy for general admission. Each of these British Museum tickets wraps a guide, an audio app or a small-group format around the visit, and most add a priority timeslot. Prices are in US dollars and come from the listings, checked in November 2026. The buttons open GetYourGuide through affiliate links (more on that on my about page).

British Museum Tickets at a Glance

This table puts the British Museum tickets side by side before the detail, so you can see what you are really paying for.

What Details
Ticket types 10 products, all guided tours that include entry; none is a plain entry ticket
Price range $7 (express tour plus audio app) to $117 (small-group highlights tour)
Areas included Main galleries on the tour route; temporary exhibits are not included (the highlights tour says so)
Official ticket General entry is free, with a free timed slot booked on the museum site; paid loan exhibitions are separate
Time to allow 2 hours for most tours, up to 5.5 hours for the archaeology course
Address Great Russell St, London WC1B 3DG (per Google Maps)
Google Maps hours 10 am to 5 pm, Friday to 8:30 pm

The free admission is documented: Wikipedia notes that, like all UK national museums, the museum charges no admission fee except for loan exhibitions. That changes how I read every British Museum ticket below. You are paying for the guide, the story and the shortcut through a very large building, not for the door.

British Museum Admission Tickets

British Museum admission tickets in the strict sense cost nothing, so the useful question is which paid product earns its price. The My tour London guided tour at $31 is my pick for the money: 4.7 stars from 592 reviews, 2 hours, and a priority timeslot for the main entrance. Languages are English, French, Italian and Spanish. You can cancel up to 24 hours before for a full refund. The listing walks you through ancient Egypt and the Rosetta Stone, then Greece and the Parthenon sculptures, Rome and the Sutton Hoo finds. One detail to plan around: the entry tickets are sent by WhatsApp an hour before the tour, or by email if you do not use it.

“Elizabeth made the tour what it was. As someone who did British museum solo, she gave me a who new angle to view the museum from.” – GetYourGuide review

With these British Museum tickets, the guide meets you on the stairs near the pillars after the security check, not outside the gates. Take that literally, because the group does not wait at the street.

British Museum Entry Tickets

British Museum entry tickets from Vox City International cost $9, the second-cheapest product here, and they combine two things. You get a one-hour express guided tour in English, then a one-hour self-guided visit with a downloadable audio app in English, French, German, Chinese, Italian, Korean and Spanish. The listing includes priority entry and a host at the meeting point, and it excludes cloakroom fees and the Bayeux tapestry. It scores 4.2 from 1,010 reviews, so it has a real crowd behind it, though a lower score than the $31 and $39 tours. The meeting point depends on the option you pick, so check your confirmation.

“Unforgettable, from the moment we met Anjelica and the tourwalk with the "the boss". we had a VIP treatment” – GetYourGuide review

Think of these British Museum entry tickets as a guided opener rather than a full tour. After an hour with the guide you are on your own with the app, which suits people who like to choose their own galleries.

British Museum Tour

A British Museum tour is where most of the money goes, and this one is a leftover in my allocation, not the best match for the section. UTG Experience London sells a guided tour with a Thames cruise option at $22, lasting 2 to 3 hours, in English, with 4.3 stars from 1,206 reviews. The description names the Great Court glass roof, the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures, the Egyptian mummies, the Sutton Hoo relics and the Winged Bulls from Khorsabad. The listing states headsets for groups of more than six people.

“The guide Serena was very knowledgeable and humorous, we enjoyed a lot.” – GetYourGuide review

Reviewers praise the guides by name for knowledge and humour, which is the same pattern as the other British Museum tickets. I compare every guided tour on my British Museum tours page. The score is lower than the tours above, so I’d choose this one on price and the cruise add-on, not on rating.

Its just too big to see in a few hours so her knowledge was extremely appreciated

British Museum Tickets Online

British Museum tickets online come in two forms: the free timed slot on the museum site, and the paid tour products here. The 2-hour Best Tours London guided tour at $39 is the one I would book for a first visit, because it is the most-reviewed product (1,715 reviews) and shares the top rating of the set, 4.9. It includes a guided tour with commentary, entrance with priority timeslots and an optional headset. Languages are French, Italian, English, Greek and Chinese. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

British Museum Admission Price

The British Museum admission price is zero for the permanent collection, and the lowest price you can pay for a guided visit is $7. That is the Vox City Walks express tour, and it comes with a self-guided hour using an audio app. It scores 3.9 from 254 reviews, the lowest rating in my set, and the listing says a donation to the British Museum is part of the price of this ticket. It excludes the Bayeux tapestry and cloakroom fees, and you meet your guide at the fountain in Russell Square, about a 7-minute walk from the museum by my estimate. Languages are English, French, German, Spanish, Korean, Chinese and Italian.

Prices are the lowest per-person prices on GetYourGuide when I last checked; the final price depends on the date, time slot and age.

British Museum tickets fall into three price bands: $7 to $9 for the Vox tours, $18 to $39 for standard 2-hour guided tours, and $57 to $117 for archaeologist-led and small-group formats.

British Museum Tickets London

British Museum tickets in London are also sold as a classic walking tour by Paseando por Europa, and the $18 listing is the cheapest of the full 2-hour guided tours. It runs in Spanish and English with an official guide and scores 4.1 from 702 reviews. The itinerary starts outside at the entrance, moves to the Enlightenment Room, which holds King George III’s library of more than 60,000 books per the listing, then on to ancient Egypt, Assyria and Greece. The meeting point is on the stairs of the main entrance, after the security check.

“It was a great tour! Just the right amount of information. Our guide was very friendly and informative! I recommend getting a guide for this museum to keep from being overwhelmed!” – GetYourGuide review

The listing warns you to go early because of the entrance queues, which affect every ticket for the British Museum. That fits the advice I give for any of these tours: arrive before the meeting time, because the security check comes before the guide.

Is British Museum Membership Worth It

I could not verify the price or the benefits of British Museum membership, so I won’t compare it to a tour. What I can say from the data is that membership and the products here solve different problems. Free entry means you do not need British Museum tickets to get in, and a guided tour solves the problem of what to see. If your reason to join is a guide, the 2-hour My tour London tour at $33 is a lower-risk first step: 4.8 stars from 157 reviews, entry tickets provided an hour before, and cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Check the museum’s membership page before you decide.

“We loved our guide Elizabetta, very friendly, enthusiastic and engaging as well as very knowledgable. Highly reccomend.Fantastic day out & hopefully will meet again sometime.” – GetYourGuide review

This is the same operator as the $31 tour above, with a higher price and a smaller review count, so among British Museum tickets of this kind I’d book the cheaper one unless dates leave you only this slot.

Is British Museum Audio App Worth It

The audio app is worth it when it comes bundled with British Museum tickets, and I would not pay extra for it alone. The two Vox products at $7 and $9 include one, in seven languages, after an hour with a guide. No product in my set sells the app by itself. This section’s card is the opposite end of the range: a leftover in my allocation, not an audio product. Babylon Tours London sells a highlights tour in private or semi-private format at $117, with a professional guide, and the listing excludes temporary exhibits. It lasts 2.5 hours and scores 4.7 from 125 reviews.

“Jake C was excellent! Very knowledgeable about the museum! Wonderful personality!” – GetYourGuide review

The highlights named in the listing are the Rosetta Stone, the Assyrian lion hunt reliefs, the Parthenon sculptures, the Lewis Chessmen, the Oxus Treasure, the Royal Game of Ur, the Mummy of Katebet and the samurai armour. That is a strong list for a first visit with these British Museum tickets, with the caveat that the listing says items on loan or in restoration may be missing.

Is British Museum Worth Visiting

Yes, and the numbers back it up: Wikipedia records 6,440,120 visitors in 2025, which made the British Museum the second most visited attraction in the United Kingdom. It opened its first galleries in 1759, per Wikidata, and the building was designed by Robert Smirke. Free entry means the only question is how to spend your time, and for a day-long deep dive the Spirit of Discovery archaeology course is the most thorough of the British Museum tickets I found.

The course costs $80, lasts 5.5 hours and is led by a qualified archaeologist who traces human history from the Stone Age onwards. It scores 4.7 from 120 reviews, and the listing marks the entrance as free in what is included. The group meets outside Russell Square station. It excludes lunch, so plan food separately.

Is British Museum Worth Going to

If you have only a morning, it is, and a ticket for the British Museum with an expert guide makes it count. The Spirit of Discovery tour with an archaeologist guide is a shorter, cheaper way into the same idea: $57, 2.5 hours, 4.9 stars from 88 reviews, entry included. The listing says the group has to leave promptly at 9:45 am to make its entry slot for the museum, and it will not wait for latecomers, so I’d treat the start time as fixed. The description promises the Rosetta Stone, the colossal statue of Ramses II, the Assyrian palaces, the Aztec treasures, the moai of Easter Island and the Lewis Chessmen. Reviewers praise the guide’s storytelling and the small group.

Opening Hours and Getting There

Google Maps lists the museum open 10 am to 5 pm, with a late opening on Friday until 8:30 pm. I could not read the official hours page for the British Museum tickets and slots, so check britishmuseum.org for holiday closures and exhibition times. The nearest Underground station is Russell Square, about a 7-minute walk, on the Piccadilly line according to TfL. Tottenham Court Road is a similar distance. My British Museum opening hours and visitor guide has the day-by-day table and the routes.

Choosing between British Museum tickets comes down to time, language and how much guiding you want. This table comes from the product listings; the sections above hold the detail.

Every one of the British Museum tickets here is a guided visit, so what separates these British Museum tickets is the guide, the length and the group size.

Near the British Museum

The museum sits in Bloomsbury, and most of what is close by is transport. The distances below are straight-line figures from Google Maps coordinates, with walking times my estimate (straight line times 1.3 at 4.8 km/h). Russell Square station is about 7 minutes away, Tottenham Court Road 7, Holborn 9 and Goodge Street 9. Covent Garden is about 12 minutes, Leicester Square 14 and Euston Square 14. The sights in the grid below are all a real walk or a short Underground ride away, so treat them as day-out ideas, not neighbours. Trafalgar Square is the nearest at about 21 minutes. St Paul’s Cathedral is about 34 minutes, the London Eye about 30, Big Ben about 34, Westminster Abbey about 36 and Buckingham Palace about 37, all by my estimate. The Natural History Museum is across town in South Kensington, and the Tower of London is in the east of the city.

Three of the tours meet at Russell Square, so it is the landmark I would use. Covent Garden and Leicester Square work for a meal or a show after a morning tour.

How I’d Choose

Frequently asked questions

How much is the ticket for the British Museum?

General entry to the British Museum is free. Wikipedia notes that, like all UK national museums, it charges no admission fee except for loan exhibitions, and you book a free timed slot on the museum's own site. The 10 products I compared on GetYourGuide are guided tours or tour-and-entry bundles, priced from $7 for an express tour with an audio guide to $117 for a small-group highlights tour.

Can I just walk in the British Museum?

The museum asks visitors to book a free timed slot on britishmuseum.org, so I would not plan to turn up without one. Several of the tours I compared also state that the group enters through a priority timeslot, and one says the entry tickets are sent by WhatsApp an hour before the tour.

Is 3 hours enough for the British Museum?

Three hours covers the highlights if you are selective. The guided tours I compared run from 2 to 3 hours, and the archaeology course lasts 5.5 hours. Reviewers of several tours say the museum is too big to see in a single visit, so pick a few galleries rather than trying to cover everything.

What is the most famous item in the British Museum?

The Rosetta Stone is the one almost every tour listing names first. Wikipedia records that King George III presented it in 1802 and that it was the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs. The Parthenon sculptures, the Sutton Hoo hoard and the Lewis Chessmen come up next in the tour descriptions.

What are the top 10 things to see at the British Museum?

From the tour descriptions I compared, the recurring highlights are the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures, the Egyptian mummies, the Assyrian lion hunt reliefs, the Sutton Hoo burial finds, the Lewis Chessmen, the Easter Island moai, the Royal Game of Ur, the Oxus Treasure and the Great Court glass roof. A guide will choose a route through these so you do not have to.

What is the best day to visit the British Museum?

I could not find a source that ranks quiet days, so I will not guess. Google Maps lists the museum open until 8:30 pm on Fridays and 5 pm on other days, and my opening hours and visitor guide has the full table. Booking the first slot of the day is the usual way to avoid a crowd.

Is the British Museum worth visiting?

Yes. Wikipedia records 6,440,120 visitors in 2025, making it the second most visited attraction in the United Kingdom, and entry is free. If you only have a couple of hours, a guided tour is the way I would see the highlights without getting lost.
