Sistine Chapel Tickets – Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket

The cheapest way to see the Sistine Chapel is the $36 Vatican Museums entrance ticket, which is non-refundable. The most-reviewed option is that same ticket: 4.5 stars from 160,078 reviews. The official site sells the Vatican Museums ticket, which includes the chapel, at 20 euros plus a 5 euro online fee. For a first visit I’d book the Made in Rome Tours guided skip-the-line tour at $66.

The Sistine Chapel has no ticket of its own. Every one of the 10 Sistine Chapel tickets I compared on GetYourGuide is a Vatican Museums entry, because the chapel is the last room of the museum route. This page is about the chapel itself and the choice between tickets, and for the full museum picture I have a separate comparison of Vatican Museums tickets. Prices for these Sistine Chapel tickets are in US dollars, checked in November 2026. Each of the Sistine Chapel tickets below opens GetYourGuide through an affiliate link (more on my about page).

Sistine Chapel Tickets at a Glance

This table puts the whole choice on one screen, so you can see what the money buys before reading the detail.

The chapel is identical whichever Sistine Chapel ticket you choose, so the Sistine Chapel tickets differ only in the way in. What differs is the way you get to it: alone with an audio guide, with a host who walks you to the door, or with a guide who explains the rooms before you arrive. The sections below take the options in turn.

Skip-the-Line Sistine Chapel Tickets

Skip-the-line Sistine Chapel tickets with a guide start at $66, and the two I’d look at are the Made in Rome Tours skip-the-line tour and the Tour Guy day with the Basilica dome. The first is the more balanced of the two. It lasts about 3 hours in English, includes a guide and guaranteed skip-the-line access to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica, and scores 4.6 from 11,985 reviews. You can cancel up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund.

“Thank you Mario! Such a passionate, knowledgeable guide … Tour as described - perfect way of experiencing the Vatican.” – GetYourGuide review

Of all the Sistine Chapel tickets with a guide, this one has the simplest start. The meeting point is on Via Plauto near St. Peter’s Square, and the listing asks you to arrive 20 minutes before the start. One reviewer praised the guide’s English and the clarity, but wished for a little less time in the museum and more in the Basilica.

The second option is the long one. For $133 the Tour Guy tour adds early-morning entry to St. Peter’s Basilica, the elevator and stairs up the dome, a guided tour of the museums that names the Pio-Clementino Museum and the Raphael Rooms, and entry to Michelangelo’s chapel. It runs 5 hours, scores 4.6 from 627 reviews and cancels free up to 24 hours before.

“Excellent guide! Well worth the extra money to get in early and avoid the crowds. Caroline was so knowledgeable and definitely made our experience even more special! Highly recommend!” – GetYourGuide review

I would only pay that gap if the dome is the reason you are going, because the plain Sistine Chapel tickets cost far less. Among Sistine Chapel tickets it is the only one that puts the climb in the same booking, and the listing starts you at Largo del Colonnato outside the colonnades rather than at the museum door.

Sistine Chapel Entry Tickets

Sistine Chapel entry tickets that come with a host rather than a guide are the middle ground, and the 1 City Tour listing at $46 is the clearest example. It includes a skip-the-line ticket to the Vatican Museums and the chapel, a local host who walks you from the meeting point to the entrance and a short orientation on the main highlights before you go in. It does not include a guide or an audio device inside, which the listing says plainly, so these Sistine Chapel entry tickets suit people who read the rooms themselves. It scores 4.6 from 1,513 reviews and lasts about 3 hours, in English, Italian and Spanish.

“This tour is a must, and I highly recommend this tour guide.” – GetYourGuide review

You meet at Viale Vaticano 98, across the street from the museum entrance, and the listing asks for 15 minutes before your time. It is non-refundable, so I’d book these Sistine Chapel tickets only when your dates are fixed. One reviewer, who had already done the museums on their own, said the host got them past the line and through the entry, after which they explored at their own pace.

Sistine Chapel Admission Tickets

Sistine Chapel admission tickets with an expert guide are best represented by the City Lights Tours listing at $82. It has the highest rating in the set, 4.7 stars from 1,040 reviews, and it lasts 2.5 to 3 hours in English. The stop list is detailed: the Museo Pio Clementino, the Gallery of the Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries, the Gallery of Maps and the Raphael Rooms, then the chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica when that option is selected. Headsets let you hear the guide in the crowd.

“Very expensive and if everyone has skip the line then no one has it 🤷‍♀️. Guide was brilliant and very knowledgeable and engaging.” – GetYourGuide review

You meet at Bar Da Paolo on Viale Vaticano 104, where the host checks you in. Of the Sistine Chapel admission tickets here, this is the one I’d choose for the guide’s route. One reviewer called it very expensive and wondered whether skip-the-line means anything when everyone has it, which is a fair doubt about the whole category. The same reviewer called the guide brilliant, so I’d read the price as a trade for the guide, not for a shorter wait.

Sistine Chapel Tour

A Sistine Chapel tour is the choice when you do not want to read the walls yourself, and two listings are worth comparing. Both are Sistine Chapel tickets with a guide built in, not separate chapel passes. The Maya Tours guided tour costs $84 for about 2.5 hours, with guides in English, Spanish, French and German. It includes skip-the-ticket-line entry to the Vatican Museums and the chapel, a professional guide and St. Peter’s Basilica. It scores 4.6 from 3,184 reviews and cancels free up to 24 hours before. The listing warns that the Basilica can close at short notice, and on some Wednesday mornings for the Papal audience.

“Very nuce tour. It is a must on your list once arrived in Rome” – GetYourGuide review

The meeting point is the Habemus office on Via del Mascherino, 30 minutes before your booked time. I’d treat this as the listing to read twice, because the tour and the plain ticket share one page, and the cheaper Sistine Chapel tickets are not always the ones with a guide. I compare every guided tour on my Sistine Chapel tours page.

Is Sistine Chapel Free

The Sistine Chapel is not free on an ordinary day, and Sistine Chapel tickets are needed for every date except one free window. The official Vatican Museums site says entry is free on the last Sunday of each month, when the museums open from 9 am to 2 pm with final entry at 12:30 pm, and for children under 7. The chapel is part of that visit, because the official prices page says the museum ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued. I would expect the free Sunday to be busy, but I have no figures, so I won’t give you one.

On other days the nearest match among the leftovers is the Discover Rome Tours entry experience at $48. It includes an entry ticket, access to the chapel and an English electronic guidebook, and the guided tour is included only if you select that option. It does not include skipping the security control, and it is non-refundable. It scores 4.3 from 1,095 reviews.

“We had great time at the museum, plenty to see and the audio guide was sufficient for the self tour, we spend more than 3 hrs in the museum including a lovely lunch at the cafe. Strongly recommend!” – GetYourGuide review

One reviewer wrote that the ticketing system was slightly annoying, because the app said to arrive at one time and they were put in a queue, while latecomers went to a shorter line. I’d choose a different listing before this one unless the option you want is available, since other Sistine Chapel tickets here carry a free cancellation.

Sistine Chapel Tickets Official

The official tickets for the Sistine Chapel are the Vatican Museums tickets sold at tickets.museivaticani.va, which the museums’ own pages call the only official site for buying tickets online. The official site lists the full ticket at 20 euros without online booking and 20 euros plus 5 euros with the skip-the-line booking. Tickets are valid only on the day they are issued, and the page says plainly that tickets cannot be refunded. I could not read the booking screen, so I cannot tell you which dates are open.

The official site also warns about look-alike domains that charge much more. What a GetYourGuide listing adds to the official Sistine Chapel tickets is a host or guide, a meeting point and, on most tours, free cancellation. The $36 entrance ticket is the nearest thing to the official one: skip-the-ticket-line entry to the Vatican Museums and the chapel, an optional audio guide, and the booking fee, at 4.5 stars from 160,078 reviews, the largest count of the 10.

Sistine Chapel Tickets Online

Sistine Chapel tickets online are all timed, so the question is how much you want included. Buying Sistine Chapel tickets online is also the only way I’d plan a visit. The Travel Trust listing at $39 is the cheapest way after the plain entrance ticket: reserved entry to the museums and the chapel, with optional host assistance at the meeting point. It scores 4.4 from 5,453 reviews, is valid for 24 hours and is non-refundable. “You only need to buy it here in case it’s Wolf out in the official website, because the price here is way higher.” – GetYourGuide review

The catch is the check-in. You go to the Via Germanico 40 office, the staff hand over the tickets, and then you walk to the entrance on your own, about 5 minutes. The listing asks you to arrive 25 minutes early and says a late arrival or no-show means no entry and no refund. One reviewer who could not buy in advance ended up paying about 110 euros for two tickets and still said it was worth it, which is a good reason to book early.

What You See Inside the Sistine Chapel

The chapel is 40.9 metres long, 13.4 metres wide and up to 20.7 metres high, according to Wikipedia. Pope Sixtus IV had it built between 1473 and 1481, and it was consecrated on 15 August 1483. Michelangelo painted the ceiling between 1508 and 1512, and The Last Judgment on the altar wall between 1535 and 1541. The side walls carry earlier frescoes by Botticelli, Perugino, Ghirlandaio and Rosselli.

Before you book tickets for the Sistine Chapel, know what the chapel asks of you. The official visitor advice says silence is required and photographs are forbidden:

In the Sistine Chapel it is forbidden to take photographs or films with any type of electronic equipment.
— Vatican Museums, useful information for visitors

Guards can ask you to delete pictures on the spot, and no ticket for the Sistine Chapel changes that rule. Guides explain the ceiling in the earlier rooms because the official page says groups receive the information before entering and then look in silence. A reviewer of the $36 ticket wrote that they were surprised by the photo ban, so it is better to know in advance.

Opening Hours and Getting There

Per Google Maps the chapel is open 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, and closed on Sunday. The official site gives the same hours with final entry at 6 pm, and lists closures. The hours, the closing days, the best time of day and the metro stops are on my Sistine Chapel opening hours and visitor guide. If you are still choosing among Sistine Chapel tickets, the guide also explains the timing. The short version: the nearest metro stop in my data is Ottaviano, and the museum entrance is the door for every ticket here.

Near the Sistine Chapel

The chapel sits inside the Apostolic Palace, so nothing is far from it in a straight line, but the walks below start from the museum exit, not the chapel door. Distances are straight-line from the chapel to each sight, and the walking times are my estimate (distance multiplied by 1.3, at 4.8 km/h). The Vatican Museums are about 0.4 km away, roughly 6 minutes, and St. Peter’s Basilica is about 0.1 km, but the real route between them is longer than the line.

Castel Sant’Angelo is about 1.0 km away (roughly 16 minutes) and Piazza Navona about 1.6 km (26 minutes). The Pantheon is 1.9 km away, about 31 minutes, and the Trevi Fountain 2.4 km, about 39 minutes. The Colosseum, 3.4 km away, has its own Colosseum tickets page if you are fitting both into the same day. I’d keep the Vatican for a morning, since the chapel is a slow room to leave, and I’d book the Sistine Chapel tickets before choosing the afternoon plans.

How I’d Choose

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fee to see the Sistine Chapel?

Yes. The chapel has no separate ticket: it is on the Vatican Museums ticket, which the official site prices at 20 euros, or 25 euros with the 5 euro online skip-the-line booking. On GetYourGuide the cheapest way in is the $36 entrance ticket, and guided tours that add St. Peter's Basilica run from $66 to $133.

Can you walk from the Sistine Chapel to St. Peter's Basilica?

They are close. Google Maps puts the two about 100 metres apart in a straight line. I could not find the official route between them described, so I won't promise a shortcut. The guided tours I compared list the Basilica as the last stop after the chapel, and the guide leads the way. The official site asks visitors who continue to the Basilica not to leave luggage in the museums.

What day to avoid the Vatican?

Sunday, if you want the standard visit: the museums, and with them the chapel, are closed every Sunday except the last of the month, when entry is free from 9 am to 2 pm. The official site also lists closing dates such as 1 and 6 January, 29 June and 25 December. One tour listing says St. Peter's Basilica can close on some Wednesday mornings for the Papal audience.

What is the best tour for visiting the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel?

For a first visit I'd book the Made in Rome Tours skip-the-line tour at $66: 4.6 stars from 11,985 reviews, about 3 hours, a guide, and the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica all included. If you want the best rating, City Lights Tours scores 4.7 at $82.

How long does it take to tour the Sistine Chapel?

The official site gives no time for the chapel alone, and it is the final room of the museum route, not a separate visit. The guided tours I compared last 2.5 to 3.5 hours, and the Tour Guy day with the Basilica dome runs 5 hours. One reviewer of an unguided ticket wrote that they spent more than 3 hours in the museums.

Can I wear jeans to the Vatican?

The official visitor advice does not mention jeans. It says sleeveless or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted in the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Covered shoulders and knees are the rule to plan around.

Can I bring a water bottle into the Vatican Museums?

You can carry it in your bag, but the official site forbids eating and drinking inside the exhibition halls. A cloakroom stores food and drink free of charge, and you must collect it before closing. Vending machines and cafes sit along the museum route.
