This Rome attractions map pins 19 sights, and the walk from the Colosseum to the Palatine Hill is about 7 minutes by my estimate. The Vatican Museums are roughly an hour from the Colosseum on foot, so I treat the city as three zones: ancient Rome, the historic centre and Vatican City. Each pin on the Rome attractions map links to the tickets for that sight, such as my Colosseum tickets page.
The pins sit at each attraction’s Google Maps location, and the numbered list under the map links to the same pages. Below, the attractions map of Rome is split by area, with the walking times between neighbours and a one-day and a two-day route that follow the map. For prices and which tickets to book first, start with my Rome attraction tickets hub. Prices are in US dollars, checked in November 2026, and the tickets that open GetYourGuide are affiliate links (see my about page).
How to Read This Rome Attractions Map
All walking times here are estimates. I took the straight-line distance between two Google Maps coordinates, multiplied it by 1.3 for the real street pattern, and divided by a walking speed of 4.8 km/h. Rome has hills, crowds and cobbles, so add a few minutes to each leg. If a leg matters to your plan, check it on a live map before you commit.
One more caution: a pin marks a place on the map, not the door you queue at. The Colosseum has its own entrances and meeting points, which the Colosseum opening hours guide covers, and the same goes for the Vatican.
Ancient Rome on the Map
The ancient core is the tightest cluster on the Rome attractions map, and it is the first thing you notice when you zoom into the map of Rome attractions. From the Colosseum it is about 4 minutes on foot to the Domus Aurea, 7 minutes to Palatine Hill and 9 minutes to the Roman Forum. Between the Forum and the Palatine Hill the walk is about 6 minutes. The Circus Maximus is the outlier of the group: about 14 minutes from the Colosseum, or 10 from the Palatine Hill, measured to the Circo Massimo metro stop in Google Maps.
These sights pair well in one morning. The official Colosseum site sells a combined ticket for the amphitheatre, Forum and Palatine, and a timed slot is mandatory. The Domus Aurea has its own ticket and is closed on the first Sunday of every month, per the tourism board, so I’d check the date before building a day around it.

Historic Centre: Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Spanish Steps
The historic centre is the second cluster on the Rome attractions map. The Trevi Fountain to the Pantheon is about 10 minutes, the Trevi Fountain to the Spanish Steps is about 9, and the Pantheon to the steps about 16. All three fit a single afternoon on foot. The Trevi is free to see from the piazza, and the basin area has cost 2 euros for non-residents since 2 February 2026, per ANSA.
The link between the first two clusters is the walk from the Roman Forum to the Trevi Fountain: about 16 minutes. From the Colosseum it is about 23 minutes to the Trevi Fountain and 26 to the Pantheon. The whole historic centre is part of Rome’s UNESCO-listed historic centre, which is why this part of the Rome attractions map looks so dense.
Villa Borghese and the Borghese Gallery
A little north of the Spanish Steps the Villa Borghese park starts, about 15 minutes from the steps. The Borghese Gallery sits about 9 minutes further, on the park’s east side. The gallery needs a timed reservation, which I explain on the gallery’s own page, and the park around it is free. I’d put the pair on a half-day of their own, because the gallery slot decides the schedule.
Vatican City on the Map
The Vatican sits on the opposite side of the river from the centre on the Rome attractions map. Inside it, the Vatican Museums to St. Peter’s Basilica is about 8 minutes on foot. The Sistine Chapel pin sits right beside the Basilica, but that is only the Rome attractions map: you reach the chapel by walking through the museums, so do not plan a two-minute hop. The Basilica itself is free to enter per its official site.
The Castel Sant’Angelo is about 17 minutes from the Basilica and about 16 from the Pantheon, so it is the natural bridge between the Vatican and the centre. From the Colosseum to the Vatican Museums the estimate is about 4.8 km, or an hour on foot.

“Zara was very engaging . As returning guests with some knowledge about the exhibits we still learned a lot of new information. Pace was great and time flew by.” – GetYourGuide review
The Catacombs of Rome and the Appian Way lie south-east of the Colosseum. The park of the Appian Way is about 3.2 km from the Colosseum, about 40 minutes by my estimate, and the Catacombs of San Callisto are about 4.9 km away, roughly an hour. I don’t treat these as walkable from the ancient core. The tours I compared for the Appian Way are bike or minibus trips, so I book one of those as a separate morning.
Day Trips: Tivoli and Civita di Bagnoregio
Two sights need a whole day, and they are not on foot. Hadrian’s Villa is about 24 km and Villa d’Este about 26 km from the Colosseum in a straight line, and the two are about 2.7 km apart in Tivoli. Every Tivoli product I compared starts in Rome. The Civita di Bagnoregio day trips start in Rome too. I have no coordinates for the village, so I give no distance and no walking time.
One-Day Route Following the Map
If you have a single day, the Rome attractions map says to stay inside the first two clusters and keep the legs short. Total walking between stops is about 55 minutes by my estimate, and the sights do the rest.
Colosseum, then the Palatine Hill, about 7 minutes.
Palatine Hill to the Roman Forum, about 6 minutes.
Roman Forum to the Trevi Fountain, about 16 minutes.
Trevi Fountain to the Pantheon, about 10 minutes.
Pantheon to the Spanish Steps, about 16 minutes.
The price of that day is a guided combo of about $48 for the ancient sites, per my Rome attraction tickets hub. The other stops can be seen free from outside, so I skip extra tickets on a first day.

“Tour with Alice was amazing, very knowledgeable & good sense of humour” – GetYourGuide review
Day one is the same as above. Day two is Vatican City and the river. The walk from the Vatican Museums to the Basilica is about 8 minutes, then it is about 17 minutes on to the Castel Sant’Angelo, and about 16 more to the Pantheon if you want to finish in the centre. That makes about 25 minutes of walking inside the day, with the Vatican itself taking most of the morning.
If you add the Borghese Gallery, put it on a third half-day: the map shows it is on the other side of the centre, about 19 minutes from the Spanish Steps. For the free alternatives to every paid stop, see my free attractions in Rome page. If you are weighing a city pass instead of single tickets, my Rome City Pass compared page does the sums.
Where This Rome Attractions Map Helps
I use this Rome attractions map to avoid two mistakes: crossing the city twice in a day, and booking two timed slots too close together. Check the opening hours of any paid sight before you fix a route, and book the timed ones first. The links on the numbered list under the map take you to the ticket page for each pin.
Frequently asked questions
How far apart are the main sights on the Rome attractions map?+
The ancient sites are very close: the Colosseum to the Domus Aurea is about 4 minutes and to the Palatine Hill about 7 minutes on foot, by my estimate. The Trevi Fountain is roughly 23 minutes from the Colosseum, and the Vatican Museums are about an hour away. My times are straight-line distances times 1.3 at 4.8 km/h, so treat them as estimates.
Which Rome sights can I see in one morning?+
The Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum fit one morning, since the walks between them are 6 to 9 minutes. The Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Spanish Steps fit another, with 9 to 16 minutes between each. The park ticket at the Colosseum covers the first three sites.
Is the Vatican close to the Colosseum?+
No. The Vatican Museums are about 4.8 km from the Colosseum by my estimate, which is roughly an hour on foot, so I plan them as separate halves of the trip. Inside Vatican City, the museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica are within about 8 minutes of each other.
Can I walk to the Appian Way and the catacombs?+
I wouldn't. The Catacombs of San Callisto are about 4.9 km from the Colosseum by my estimate, around an hour on foot. Most of the tours I compared for the area are bike or minibus trips, so I treat the catacombs and the Appian Way as one separate outing.
Can Tivoli and Civita di Bagnoregio be visited from the centre?+
Only as day trips. Hadrian's Villa is about 24 km and Villa d'Este about 26 km from the Colosseum in a straight line, and the products I compared all start in Rome. Civita di Bagnoregio tours also start in Rome, but I have no coordinates for the village, so I give no distance.
Which Rome sights are free to see on the map?+
St. Peter's Basilica is free to enter per its official site, and the Spanish Steps, the Villa Borghese park and the Trevi Fountain from the piazza cost nothing. The Trevi basin area has cost 2 euros for non-residents since 2 February 2026. My free attractions page lists the rest.
