Disneyland Paris history is the story of a very large bet that started badly and then grew into Europe’s biggest resort. This page gives you the Disneyland Paris history as a dated timeline, then by period, then as a numbered list of facts with the source for each. I wrote it from Wikipedia, Wikidata and the official site, and I give numbers as those sources give them. When you are ready to turn the history into a day out, my page on tickets for Disneyland Paris compares all 7 options.

Disneyland Paris History: The Deal and the Build

The Disneyland Paris history begins with a signature. Wikipedia says Michael Eisner signed the first letter of agreement with the French government on 18 December 1985, for a site of 20 square kilometres (4,940 acres). The final contract followed on 24 March 1987, and construction began in August 1988. An information centre called Espace Euro Disney opened in December 1990, so visitors could see the plans before there was anything to ride.

The result was Disneyland Park, which Wikipedia describes as based on a larger scale of Disneyland in California and the Magic Kingdom in Florida. Its centrepiece is Sleeping Beauty Castle, known in French as Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant, and next to it sits Disney Village, the entertainment, shopping and dining district.

The 1992 Opening and the Early Troubles

Euro Disney Resort opened on 12 April 1992, and it did not go to plan. Wikipedia reports about 25,000 visitors on the first day against a prediction of 60,000. In May 1992 there were reports that about a quarter of the workforce, roughly 3,000 people, had resigned, although the company’s Robert Fitzpatrick put the figure at 1,000. On 23 July 1992 Euro Disney projected a first-year net loss of about 300 million French francs.

By summer 1994 the company carried about 3 billion dollars of debt. A rescue deal followed in which Disney’s stake fell from 49 percent to 39 percent. I find the early troubles the most useful part of the Disneyland Paris history, because the resort you visit today is the product of that restructuring.

Disneyland Paris Name Changes

The Disneyland Paris history includes more renamings than most visitors realise. Wikipedia gives this sequence: Euro Disney Resort from 12 April 1992 to 31 May 1994, Euro Disneyland Paris from 1 June to 30 September 1994, Disneyland Paris from 1 October 1994 to 15 March 2002, Disneyland Resort Paris from 16 March 2002 to 3 April 2009, and Disneyland Paris again from 4 April 2009 to now.

Growth: Second Park and New Rides

A second park arrived on 16 March 2002, when Walt Disney Studios Park opened. The first big thrill ride had come earlier, with Space Mountain: De la Terre à la Lune on 31 May 1995, which Wikipedia says cost 100 million dollars and was later renamed Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain. Star Tours: The Adventures Continue opened on 26 March 2017 for the 25th anniversary.

The anniversaries are a convenient way to follow the Disneyland Paris history. The 20th anniversary theme year began on 12 April 2012, with a March 2012 study estimating 37 billion euros of tourism revenue over twenty years. The 25th ran from 2017 into 2018, and the 30th in 2022 included a drone show called Disney D-Light.

Disneyland Paris History Since 2017: Full Ownership and Expansion

In early 2017 Disney bought 9 percent of Euro Disney S.C.A. from Kingdom Holding and made a tender offer, and on 19 June 2017 the company was acquired by The Walt Disney Company, giving it full control. On 27 February 2018 Disney announced a 2 billion euro investment, with three new areas based on Marvel, Frozen and Star Wars planned for 2021 to 2025. Wikipedia says that plan had not been completed as of June 2024.

The latest chapter is a rename. Wikipedia reports that Walt Disney Studios Park became Disney Adventure World in March 2026, at the same time as the public opening of the World of Frozen land, which the article says has a 36 metre mountain. Attractions and areas change often, so check the official site for what is open on your dates.

What the Disneyland Paris History Means for Your Visit

Knowing the Disneyland Paris history changes how the place reads on the ground. The resort is a planned development of about 2,100 hectares according to Wikipedia, with roughly half of it built, so it was designed with room to grow, and the second park, the hotels and Disney Village all came from that plan. The two parks have different ages and different feels: Disneyland Park dates from 1992 and Walt Disney Studios Park from 2002.

It also explains why the park names and ride names on older guidebooks or photos may not match what you see now. Space Mountain became Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain, the second park has been renamed in 2026, and the resort itself has had four names. If a reviewer or a blog mentions Euro Disney or Disneyland Resort Paris, they mean the same place, just from a different decade. Wikipedia and the official site are the two sources I trust for the current names.

Disneyland Paris Facts: Where the Numbers Come From

Visitor numbers are the one place in the Disneyland Paris history where sources disagree. Wikipedia lists 16.1 million visitors in 2023 and 15.8 million in 2024, while Wikidata lists 10,400,000 for 2023. I use Wikipedia’s figures because the article gives a year-by-year series, and I mention the mismatch because I could not tell what Wikidata’s figure counts.

Frequently asked questions

When did Disneyland Paris open?

Euro Disney Resort and its first park, Disneyland Park, opened on 12 April 1992, according to Wikipedia. Wikidata gives 1992 as the opening year. Walt Disney Studios Park, the second park, followed on 16 March 2002.

Why was Disneyland Paris originally called Euro Disney?

Wikipedia lists the resort as Euro Disney Resort from 12 April 1992 to 31 May 1994, then Euro Disneyland Paris for a few months, then Disneyland Paris from 1 October 1994. It was renamed Disneyland Resort Paris from 16 March 2002 and went back to Disneyland Paris on 4 April 2009.

How big is Disneyland Paris?

Wikipedia gives a site of about 2,100 hectares (5,200 acres), of which about half has been developed. It gives a different figure in another section of the same article, so I treat the size as approximate.

Was Disneyland Paris a success when it opened?

Not at first. Wikipedia reports about 25,000 visitors on opening day against a forecast of 60,000, and by summer 1994 the company carried about 3 billion dollars of debt before a rescue deal. Attendance later grew to a record 16.1 million in 2023.

Wikipedia lists 16.1 million visitors in 2023, described as a record, and 15.8 million in 2024. Wikidata lists 10,400,000 for 2023, which does not match Wikipedia's total, so I quote the Wikipedia figure.
