Appian Way Tickets – Appian Way, Catacombs, & Roman Aqueducts E-bike Tour

The cheapest Appian Way tickets on GetYourGuide are the TopTours bike tour at $50, and the most-reviewed is TopBike’s e-bike tour at $66: 4.9 stars from 1,990 reviews. Walking the road itself costs nothing; the tickets pay for a guide, a bike or cart and catacomb entry. For a first visit I’d book the ESBIKE tour at $71.

I compared all 10 Appian Way tickets you can book on GetYourGuide right now. None of them is a plain entry ticket, because the Appian Way is a road and a park, not a gated building. Every listing is a guided trip along it by e-bike, golf cart or minibus, and most add a catacomb. Prices are in US dollars, taken from the listings in November 2026. The links that open GetYourGuide are affiliate links (more on that on my about page).

Appian Way Tickets at a Glance

Appian Way tickets work differently from tickets for a single monument, so this table starts with what you actually pay for.

What Details
Entry to the road Free; the old road is open to walkers, per the regional park and Wikipedia
Ticket types 10 guided tours: 8 by e-bike or bike, 1 by golf cart, 1 by minibus with walking
Price range $50 (TopTours bike tour) to $86 (golf cart tour with catacomb entry)
Catacombs Named in 9 of the 10 listings, sometimes only in the longer option
Time to allow 2.5 hours (golf cart) to 5 hours (e-bike with lunch)
Cancellation Free up to 24 hours before, on all 10
Address Via Appia Antica 200, 00178 Rome (per Google Maps)
Google Maps hours Open 24 hours, every day

The big difference between Appian Way tickets is what the price includes beyond the ride. A catacomb visit is the most common extra, and a lunch or aperitivo the second. The sites on the road, such as the Tomb of Caecilia Metella and the Villa dei Quintili, are run by the Parco Archeologico dell’Appia Antica and are ticketed separately: the full price is 8 euros for Cecilia Metella with Capo di Bove and 8 euros for the Villa dei Quintili, or 12 euros for a seven-day park ticket covering six sites, per the park’s visitor page. The sites are open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 16:30 from 1 November to the end of February, and the Tomb of Caecilia Metella and the Villa dei Quintili are the two to plan around.

Appian Way Tickets and Prices

Appian Way tickets and prices start from a simple fact: you can walk the road for nothing, so the money goes on what makes the road easier to read. The ESBIKE Tours & Experiences tour costs $71 and is my pick among all the Appian Way tickets for a first visit. It scores 4.9 from 1,872 reviews, lasts 3.5 hours and uses a double-suspension CUBE PRO electric bike. The guide speaks English, French, Italian or Spanish, and you start at Via Marco Aurelio 30a.

The price of these Appian Way tickets changes with the option you select. The listing says entry to the Catacombs of Saint Callixtus is included in the option with catacombs, and a food tasting of local products is included in the option with food. Read which option the price shows before you pay. You can cancel up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund.

“Phenomenal ride! 10/10. Guide was very friendly and relax.” – GetYourGuide review

One reviewer, who called it a bucket-list activity, offers the practical warning to know before booking: the San Callisto catacombs are closed on Wednesdays, so ride on another day.

Skip-the-Line Appian Way Tickets

Skip-the-line Appian Way tickets are a slightly odd idea, since the road has no queue. What the phrase gets you here is a booked slot at the catacombs, which do run timed visits. The Walks of Italy tour at $61 includes entry to the catacombs of San Sebastiano or Domitilla, depending on the day, so you do not choose which one you see. It lasts 195 minutes, takes at most 18 guests and runs in English only, with a private air-conditioned minibus from central Rome.

The route on the listing is the Appian Way, the exterior of the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, the Roman aqueducts and the catacombs. It meets at Piramide metro station and 15 minutes early; hotel pickup and tips are not included. It scores 4.7 from 1,136 reviews, lower than the bike tours, but of all the Appian Way tickets it is the best if you do not want to cycle.

“Alex was fantastic. Knew his stuff and guided us thru.” – GetYourGuide review

Appian Way Tour

An Appian Way tour is worth booking when you want the road explained, because its stones, tombs and aqueducts are hard to read alone. TopBike Rental & Tours runs the most-reviewed one: $66, 4 hours, 4.9 stars from 1,990 reviews. It starts at the shop on Via Labicana 49, a few minutes’ walk from the Colosseum, and the guide leads you on a Cannondale e-mountain bike with anti-puncture tires. The helmet is mandatory, and you get a handlebar bag and a bottle of water. Languages are English, French, Italian, Dutch, German and Spanish.

The listing’s stop list is long: the Aurelian Walls, the catacombs, the Appian Way, the Circus of Maxentius, the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, the Villa dei Quintili, the Parco degli Acquedotti, Caffarella Park and the Baths of Caracalla. The guided visit of the catacombs is only in the 6-hour tour, so the 4-hour ride at this price rides past them. Food and drinks are not included. I compare every guided tour on my Appian Way tours page.

Appian Way Regional Park Tickets

The regional park is the protected landscape around the road. The park’s own site calls more than 16 km of the Via Appia always walkable (parcoappiaantica.it), and its offices are at Via Appia Antica 42, per Google Maps. Appian Way regional park tickets as such do not exist; what you buy are tours that move through it, and those tickets for the Appian Way are all guided. Of all the Appian Way tickets, the Roma STARBIKE tour at $55 matches this search best, because it is built around the park rather than a single catacomb. It scores 4.9 from 848 reviews, runs 4 hours and goes through Porta San Sebastiano, Caffarella Park, the Ninfeo of Egeria, the Parco degli Acquedotti, the Villa dei Quintili and the Circus of Maxentius.

The $55 covers a high-quality e-bike, a helmet, a phone holder and a guide. Child seats for up to 25 kg and a trailer bike for children aged 6 to 10 are included, which is rare. The catacombs tour and lunch (or aperitif in the afternoon) belong to the 5-hour option only. It meets near the Colosseo metro station, next to the Carrefour supermarket on Via dei Santi Quattro.

“Paolo was a Great Guide and dealt with several challenges with our group on E-bikes. Great activity for an active Family like ours!” – GetYourGuide review

Appian Entry Level

The entry-level Appian Way ticket is the TopTours bike tour at $50, the lowest price in my set. It shares most of TopBike’s route, including the Aurelian Walls, the Circus of Maxentius, the Villa dei Quintili and the Baths of Caracalla, and the same Via Labicana 49 meeting point. The difference is the bike: you get a quality mountain bike or an e-mountain bike, and the listing’s title says Bike/EBike, so check which one you are choosing.

As Appian Way tickets go, it is the cheapest: it lasts 4 hours, scores 4.9 from 189 reviews and runs in German, English, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish. The catacomb visit is again limited to the 6-hour tour. With only 189 reviews, these Appian Way tickets have a smaller track record than the leaders. One family review describes riding with a 9-year-old and says the guide made sure he felt safe; another reports being stopped by a herd of goats on the road.

Is Appian Worth It

Are Appian Way tickets worth it? The golf cart tour from Biga Tours is the Appian Way ticket I’d send someone who wants the answer without pedalling. At $86 it is the dearest of the Appian Way tickets, but it includes the catacomb entrance ticket and a guided tour of the catacombs, plus a driver-guide, headsets and a bottle of water, for a group of 14 or fewer. It takes 2.5 hours, speaks English only and scores 4.9 from 700 reviews.

The route is more central than the bike tours: Circus Maximus, the Baths of Caracalla, the Appian Way, the catacombs, the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, the Aurelian Walls and the Pyramid of Cestius. It meets in an office on Via Monterone 19. A reviewer said the ride included a stretch of the old Appian Way where “you can see the original road surface as it was 2000 years ago.” For the stop in the Circus Maximus, see my Circus Maximus tickets page.

Is Appian Way Worth Visiting

The Appian Way is worth visiting, and its tickets are worth buying, if you want old stones, tombs and countryside in the same trip, and it is a very different day from the Colosseum. Wikipedia describes it as one of the earliest and strategically most important Roman roads, begun in 312 BC, and it entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2024. The catch is distance: the sites are strung along several kilometres of road, and a few of them close on certain days.

The Enjoy Rome Catacomb of St. Callixtus tour at $76 is the most direct of the Appian Way tickets way to combine the road with the best-known catacomb. It lasts 3 hours, includes transport from and to the meeting point, entrance and booking fees, and headsets. It scores 4.6 from 606 reviews, the lowest rating here, and runs in English. The meeting point is the bus stop at Via Cavour 224, and you should show up 25 minutes early.

“So lovely and our guide Catia was so understanding with our children and need for breaks. Mario was lovely as well!” – GetYourGuide review

The guide’s role matters here. Reviewers praise the guide on this tour for the history they told on the drive between sites, so it is closer to a guided half-day than to a ticket.

Is an Appian Way Tour Company a Good Choice

Searches for whether an operator behind Appian Way tickets is good usually mean one thing: whether the people with the bikes are trustworthy. I can only answer from the reviews. TopBike’s second listing, the Appian Way and Roman Aqueducts Guided E-Bike Tour, is the lighter version of its leading tour at $61, with 4.9 stars from 238 reviews. It has a Cannondale e-bike with anti-puncture tires, a professional guide, a helmet, a handlebar bag and a bottle of water, and the same six languages. It lasts 4 hours and starts at Via Labicana 49.

This is the cheaper TopBike ride without a named catacomb entry in the included list. Its reviewers describe a small group of four and a guide who kept the group safe in busy traffic, and one calls it a fantastic afternoon tour through the historic countryside of Rome. Hotel pickup and tips are not included.

Appian Way End Point

The Appian Way end point depends on what you mean, and so does what your Appian Way tickets cover. The ancient road ended at Brindisi, about 540 km away, where a column marks the end, according to Wikipedia. The tours here finish much closer to Rome, and almost all of them return to where they began. The Roma STARBIKE underground catacombs tour at $55 runs the longest, 5 hours, and goes out through Porta San Sebastiano to the catacombs, the Ninfeo of Egeria, the Appian Way and the Tomb of Cecilia Metella.

Lunch at a restaurant is included, as are the catacomb visit, an e-bike, a helmet, a handlebar holder, child seats and a trailer bike. The guide speaks Italian and English, with French or German on request. It scores 4.9 from 157 reviews, the longest of the Appian Way tickets here. One reviewer says they covered about 20 miles in 5 to 6 hours.

One reviewer was surprised by the location: “I did not realize how far the tour was from the center of Rome.” They found it hard to get a taxi back, so plan the return.

Opening Hours and Getting There

Before you buy Appian Way tickets, note that Google Maps lists both Via Appia Antica and the regional park as open 24 hours, but the catacombs and ticketed sites keep their own hours and closing days. My Appian Way opening hours and visitor guide covers getting there, how long the road is and which day each site is closed. The golf cart and bike tours start in the centre, so you do not need to find the road yourself.

Near Appian Way

The Appian Way sits about 5 km southeast of the ancient centre, so the sights you add to your Appian Way tickets are a ride away, not a short stroll. Distances are straight lines, and the walking times are my estimate (straight line times 1.3 at 4.8 km/h). From the park office at Via Appia Antica 42, the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine are about 2.4 km, roughly 40 minutes on foot. The Roman Forum is about 2.8 km, roughly 46 minutes. The Via Appia Antica point on Google Maps lies about 2.7 km along the road from the park office.

For the biggest sight in the centre, see my Colosseum tickets page, and for the Forum, my Roman Forum tickets page. The Roman Forum is the sight I’d pair with it for a second day.

How I’d Choose

Frequently asked questions

Can you walk along the Appian Way?

Yes. The regional park's own site says more than 16 km of the Via Appia can always be walked, and Wikipedia calls the old road a free tourist attraction. The first 5 km out of Rome are busy with cars and coaches, so many people start further out or ride instead. Walking the road needs no ticket; the sites along it are a separate matter.

Do you need tickets for the Appian Way?

Not for the road itself. A ticket is needed for the catacombs and for the individual sites along it, which are run separately. The 10 listings I compared are tours that package a bike, golf cart or minibus with a guide, and most name a catacomb entry. The park authority's visitor page lists its own prices, so check it before you add a site.

How much do Appian Way tours cost?

On GetYourGuide the 10 Appian Way tours I compared cost between $50 and $86 per person. The cheapest is the TopTours bike tour at $50, the golf cart tour with catacomb entry is the dearest at $86, and the e-bike tours with a guide sit around $55 to $81. All of them can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before.

Is it worth it to see the catacombs in Rome?

Several reviewers of these tours single out the catacomb visit. One golf cart reviewer called it a beautiful experience, full of dignity and respect for the people buried there. Tours with the catacombs included are the ones to pick if that is the point; the cheaper bike options only add the visit in their longer version.

Can you cycle the Appian Way?

Yes, and it is how most of the listings here do it. Eight of the ten use e-bikes or bikes, with helmets included. Reviewers warn that the old paving is rough: one says the stones make for very rough riding if you are not used to it, and a TopBike reviewer says you should be comfortable riding bumpy and gravel surfaces.

How long does an Appian Way tour take?

From 2.5 hours for the golf cart tour to 5 hours for the Starbike e-bike tour with lunch. The Walks of Italy minibus tour takes 195 minutes, and most e-bike tours run 3.5 to 4 hours. Add time for the ride from the Colosseum area, since the Appian Way starts several kilometres from the centre.

Where does the Appian Way start and end?

Wikipedia says the full road ran from Rome to Brindisi, about 540 km, begun in 312 BC by the censor Appius Claudius Caecus. The Rome section that visitors use starts near Porta San Sebastiano, and its sites are strung along Via Appia Antica. The tours here cover a short stretch of it, not the whole road.
