A Louvre Museum map is useful twice: before you go, to know where to arrive, and inside, to know which wing and floor you are on. This page gives both, plus a route through the must-sees in the order the museum’s own trail follows. If you have not booked, my guide to tickets for the Louvre Museum compares the guided tours that include entry.

Louvre Museum Map: Entrances, Stations and Sights Around It

The map below shows the museum with the nearest stations and the sights around it, from Google Maps data.

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. Pins at Google Maps locations; walking times are my estimates (straight line × 1.3 at 4.8 km/h).

  • Louvre Museum · The attraction
  • Louvre Pyramid · Nearby sight · about 2 min walk
  • Palais Royal - Musée du Louvre · Station · about 4 min walk
  • Louvre - Rivoli · Station · about 4 min walk

By Google Maps, the nearest stations are Palais Royal - Musee du Louvre and Louvre - Rivoli, both about 4 minutes on foot by my estimate, then Pont Neuf at about 7 and Pyramides at about 9. Sainte-Chapelle is about 13 minutes away and Notre-Dame about 20. Those times come from straight-line distance multiplied by 1.3 at 4.8 km/h, so treat them as estimates. The Louvre’s plan page lists four entrances: the Pyramid, the Carrousel, Richelieu and the Porte des Lions. It says Richelieu has restricted access and that the Porte des Lions is for ticket holders. Several tours meet at the statue of Louis XIV in front of the Pyramid or at the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, so read your confirmation before you walk to a door.

The official Louvre Museum map is a PDF in English on the museum’s plan page: the official map (PDF). I have not copied or embedded it. The page also links an interactive plan and warns that some rooms may be closed during the week, so check the closures before you plan a room-by-room day. The route below follows the museum’s own visitor trail, The Louvre’s Masterpieces (PDF), whose room numbers I quote. Rooms can be reorganised, and Wikipedia notes that plans were announced in January 2025 for a room solely for the Mona Lisa, so check the current Louvre Museum map on the day.

The Route I Would Take Inside the Louvre

This is what to see in Louvre Museum wings, in the official trail’s order. I give no times because the sources I read give none per stop.

My route through the Louvre
  1. Pyramid and securityEnter through Sully, per the trail
  2. Venus de MiloSully wing, level 0, room 346
  3. Winged VictoryDenon wing, level 1, room 703
  4. Salon Carre and Grande GalerieRooms 708 and 710
  5. Mona LisaDenon wing, level 1, room 711
  6. Raft of the MedusaRoom 700, Salle Mollien
  7. Michelangelo's SlavesDenon wing, level 0, room 403
  8. Exit by the PyramidThrough the Salle du Manege

Reading the Louvre Museum Map by Wing and Floor

The Louvre Museum map is organised by three wings, Denon, Sully and Richelieu, and by levels, and the room numbers carry the clue: rooms in the 300s and 400s sit on level 0 in the trail above, and rooms in the 700s sit on level 1. That is a pattern in the rooms I quote, not a rule I can promise for every gallery, so read the official plan before you rely on it. The trail I follow uses only Sully and Denon. It does not describe the Richelieu wing, and I have not described it either, because I would be guessing.

Sully Wing, Level 0: The Venus de Milo

The trail enters through the Sully wing and takes the staircase up to level 0, following signs to Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities. Room 348 is the Salle des Caryatides, a former ballroom, and the Venus de Milo stands in room 346. The Louvre says she was found in fragments on the island of Melos, presented to King Louis XVIII and given to the museum in 1821. On the Louvre Museum map this is the start of the route, and I would pause here longer than the crowd does, because it is one of the quieter rooms on the route.

Denon Wing, Level 1: The Winged Victory

From the Venus, the trail goes through room 347 and the rotunda to a staircase, and up to the large winged figure on a ship. This is room 703 in the Denon wing, level 1, at the top of the Daru staircase. Wikipedia says the monument was found in the Aegean in 1863 and displayed from 1883 at the foot of that staircase. The Louvre says it was cleaned and conserved in 2014. Opposite it, the trail points you to Botticelli’s frescoes in room 706, which reached the Louvre in 1882.

The Salon Carre and the Grande Galerie

Room 708, the Salon Carre, was the 18th-century exhibition space for the Royal Academy, where artists’ reputations were made or broken, per the museum. The Grande Galerie, room 710, holds five paintings and 22 drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, according to the trail, including La Belle Ferronniere and the Saint Anne. It is a long gallery, so walk it slowly. On any Louvre Museum map it is the spine of the Denon wing, which is why so many tours cross it.

The Mona Lisa, Room 711

The Mona Lisa hangs in the Salle des Etats, room 711, the Louvre’s largest room, in a temperature- and humidity-controlled glass case. The trail says it has been there since 1966. Opposite it hangs Veronese’s The Wedding Feast at Cana, which the Louvre calls the biggest painting in the museum at almost 70 square metres. Expect a queue at the Mona Lisa, and look behind you while you wait.

Room 700: The Raft of the Medusa and Liberty

Behind the Mona Lisa the trail goes into the next room and turns left into a long gallery with red walls, the Salle Mollien, room 700. It holds Gericault’s The Raft of the Medusa, which the Louvre says was completed in 8 months and bought in 1824, and Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People, which the trail says shows the July 1830 uprising, not the Revolution of 1789. The Cafe Mollien and toilets are close by.

Denon Wing, Level 0: Michelangelo and the Pyramid View

The trail then goes down the large staircase to room 403, level 0 of the Denon wing, where Michelangelo’s two Slaves and Canova’s Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss stand. Leave the room and go down the steps, and from the landing you see the Pyramid through the window. Wikipedia says I. M. Pei’s Pyramid was proposed in 1984 and the main entrance has been beneath it since 1993. Follow the signs through the Salle du Manege to the exit.

Getting Around Inside: Plan Your Visit

Save the Louvre Museum map PDF to your phone before you go, so it opens without a connection. A second look at the Louvre Museum map shows why a route helps. Wikipedia says about 35,000 works are on display across eight curatorial departments, which is why a plan beats wandering. My Louvre Museum opening hours guide covers the days, last entry and the Wednesday and Friday evenings. If you would rather have a guide, I compare each tour on my Louvre Museum tours page, and the story behind the building is on my Louvre Museum facts page. When you are ready to book, compare every Louvre Museum ticket in one place. The home page lists the other attractions I cover.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Louvre Museum map?

Yes. The Louvre publishes a PDF floor plan in English on louvre.fr/en/plan, and an interactive plan on its collections site. I link the PDF below and have not copied it. The same page warns that some rooms may be closed during the week.

Where is the Mona Lisa in the Louvre?

Per the Louvre's own visitor trail, the Mona Lisa hangs in room 711, the Salle des Etats, in the Denon wing on level 1. The trail reaches it from the Grande Galerie, room 710, by taking the first right.

What are the big 3 at the Louvre?

The three works most visitors name are the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. The official trail puts them in room 711 (Denon, level 1), room 346 (Sully, level 0) and room 703 (Denon, level 1).

What are the Louvre wings called?

The three wings are Denon, Sully and Richelieu, per Wikipedia. The Louvre's plan page lists four entrances: the Pyramid, Carrousel, Richelieu and Porte des Lions, and says the Richelieu entrance has restricted access.

How long do you need to see the Louvre highlights?

The guided tours I compared run from 1 hour to 3 hours. For the route below on your own I would allow at least half a day, because the museum is large: Wikipedia says more than 60,600 square metres are dedicated to the permanent collection.
