Most visitors want to know what is inside Notre Dame Cathedral before they decide how long to queue. This page works as a Notre Dame Cathedral map and a reading order: the island and its entrances first, then the route I would follow from the square to the exit. Seeing inside Notre Dame Cathedral costs nothing. Entry is free, so your choice is between going in alone, reserving a slot or paying for a guide. My comparison of tickets for Notre Dame Cathedral lays out all eight options.
Notre Dame Cathedral Map: Île de la Cité, Stations and Sights
The map below shows the cathedral with the stations and landmarks around it, from Google Maps data.
Saint-Germain-des-Prés · Station · about 19 min walk
The cathedral stands on the Île de la Cité, at 6 Parvis Notre-Dame, Place Jean-Paul II, 75004 Paris. The nearest station is Cité, about 6 minutes away on foot, and Maubert-Mutualité is about 6 minutes. Cluny-La Sorbonne and Sainte-Chapelle are about 7 minutes away, and Saint-Michel about 8. The walking times are my estimates, straight-line distance multiplied by 1.3 at 4.8 km per hour. For current lines check the RATP site.
I looked for an official floor plan and could not find one. The cathedral’s own site, notredamedeparis.fr, blocked my access, and the search results showed no downloadable plan. So I do not link an official map, and I will not draw one from memory. What follows is built from Wikipedia, the official statements already quoted on my other pages, and the tour listings, and I say plainly where a detail is not confirmed.
The Route I’d Take Inside Notre Dame Cathedral
Inside Notre Dame Cathedral the route is short, and what is inside Notre Dame Cathedral for a visitor with an hour is the nave, the windows and the organ, so the order matters more than the minutes. I leave out the times on the diagram, because no source gives a time for each stop.
My route inside Notre Dame Cathedral
1The square and Point ZeroLook at the facade first
2The west portalsThree doorways of sculpture
3The naveWalk the length of the building
4The rose windowsLight from three directions
5The Great OrganAbove the entrance
6The Crown of ThornsShown on set occasions
7The towersA separate ticket and 424 steps
The Square and Point Zéro
Start outside, on the parvis. Wikipedia mentions a road-system marker set in the ground in front of Notre-Dame since 1924, known as Point Zéro, the point from which distances to Paris are measured. Stand back from the doors for a minute, because the west front is easier to read from the square than from the queue. Several guided tours meet here, at the statue of Charlemagne, and others meet at Place Louis Lépine near Cité station, so read your voucher before you walk to the doors.
The West Portals
Wikipedia names three portals on the west façade: the Portal of the Virgin, the Portal of the Last Judgment in the centre and the Portal of St Anne. The central doorway shows the Last Judgment, the right one the coronation of the Virgin, and the left one saints important to Parisians. Most of the guided tours I compared give you this façade as a talk before you go in, which is why a short guided walk is a good use of 45 minutes.

“Guide très intéressante et qui connaît très bien son sujet !! Plusieurs anecdotes et renseignement sur le trajet en allant à la cathédrale . Un grand merci , nous avons passés un bon moment . Je recommande” – GetYourGuide review
The cathedral is about 128 metres long and 48 metres wide, according to Wikipedia, so the walk down the nave is longer than it looks from the square. Once you are inside Notre Dame Cathedral, I would keep to the route the stewards mark and take the first minutes to look up, since the restoration after the fire of 15 April 2019 brought the building back to the public in December 2024. I could not confirm the current visitor route or whether it is one-way, so follow the signs on the day.
The Rose Windows
Wikipedia gives the west rose as 9.6 metres across and the south transept rose as 12.9 metres, or 19 metres with its surrounding frame. The rose windows survived the 2019 fire, per the same article. Look for them from the nave, because the glass is the part of inside Notre Dame Cathedral that photographs worst and rewards a slow look best. Some medieval glass was damaged in 1944 and replaced with modern abstract designs, so not every window is medieval.
The Great Organ
Wikipedia says the Great Organ has over 8,000 pipes and was built by François Thierry in the 18th century, and the cathedral has three organs in total. You see the case above the west entrance as you turn back toward it, and it is one of the sights inside Notre Dame Cathedral that most visitors miss by looking forward. I did not find a confirmed concert schedule on a source I could read, so I will not give a recital time here. If music matters to you, check the official site for the next one.
The Crown of Thorns and the Treasury
The Crown of Thorns returned to the cathedral on 13 December 2024 for public veneration, per Wikipedia, and a piece is kept in the treasury. Veneration happens on set occasions, so no ticket and no tour guarantees you will see it. Treat it as a bonus among the things to see inside Notre Dame Cathedral, and ask your guide what is on show that day.

“Excellent, so informative and presented in a lively, interesting manner. I highly recommend Carolina!” – GetYourGuide review
The towers are a separate visit, run by the Centre des monuments nationaux. The towers site lists 16 euros and a route of 424 steps, and none of the eight guided tour listings includes them. Wikipedia gives both towers as 69 metres high, with 387 steps in the south tower’s stairway, a different figure from the official 424 because the official route is longer than one staircase. Book the climb on the official site, and plan it for another day if your legs are tired.
Getting Around Inside Notre Dame Cathedral: Access and Rules
Before you go inside Notre Dame Cathedral, decide how you will enter. A walk-in visit is free and needs no booking, per the official site, while a reserved slot or a guided group entrance can save time at busy hours. One reviewer on the timed-entry listing saw a line of about 100 people and got in within minutes, so queues move, but I would not count on that in summer. Keep your hands free, because bags are the usual reason for delay at a security check.
The cathedral is a place of worship, so cover your shoulders, keep your voice down and expect a security check. I could not read the official bag and accessibility pages, so I do not list rules as fact. Contact the cathedral before you go if you use a wheelchair or push a pushchair.
Inside Notre Dame Cathedral you walk through a long nave under Gothic vaults, past stained glass and rose windows, with the Great Organ of over 8,000 pipes above the entrance. The Crown of Thorns returned to the cathedral on 13 December 2024, per Wikipedia, though it is shown only on set occasions.
Is there an official Notre Dame Cathedral map?+
I could not find an official floor plan to link. The cathedral's own site blocked my access, and the search results showed no downloadable plan, so I link none. This page maps the island around the cathedral and gives the order I would follow inside.
Is it free to go inside Notre Dame Cathedral?+
Yes. The official site describes the cathedral as open to all, freely and free of charge, without any ticket. You can reserve a free time slot, and the tower climb is a separate paid visit on its own site, at 16 euros.
How long do you need inside Notre Dame Cathedral?+
The guided tours I compared run 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, and the timed-entry listing is one hour. I would allow an hour for the interior and extra for the square outside and for the towers if you book them.
Can you go up the towers of Notre Dame?+
Yes, with a separate ticket. The official towers site lists 16 euros and a route of 424 steps. None of the eight guided tour listings I compared includes the towers, so book the climb separately.
