The Palace of Versailles map is really three maps: the palace itself, the gardens behind it and the Trianon estate at the far end. Most visitors only plan the first, and a Palace of Versailles map that stops at the palace door leaves out most of the estate. This page gives the Palace of Versailles map of the town and entrances, then the walk I would take from the first room to the Queen’s Hamlet. Your ticket decides how much of it you can enter, so my guide to tickets for the Palace of Versailles explains what each one includes.
Palace of Versailles Map: Place d’Armes, Estate and Trianon
The map below shows the palace on the Google Maps data I hold for this site.
The palace is at Place d’Armes, 78000 Versailles, in the town of Versailles southwest of Paris. My Google Maps data for this page holds no stations near the palace, only Paris metro stations, so I will not invent walking times from a station. The official site has the transport information, and my Palace of Versailles opening hours guide covers how to arrive from Paris.
The estate is large, and any useful Palace of Versailles map has to show the distances between the three areas. Wikipedia gives the park as 815 hectares today, down from more than 8,000 before the French Revolution, with 93 hectares of formal gardens, per Wikipedia. Distances inside the estate are long, which is why the order of your day matters.
The Official Palace of Versailles Map
The official plan your visit page links an online map called Explore the Estate, and says the free app carries an interactive map too. I link the official online map and do not copy it. I found no downloadable PDF plan on the page. The page also warns that large baggage over 55 by 35 by 25 cm is not admitted, and that every bag and vehicle is checked on entry.
The Route I’d Take Inside Palace of Versailles
This is the order I would follow if your ticket covers the palace, gardens and Trianon. It answers what to see inside Palace of Versailles in order, and it works as a reading guide for the official Palace of Versailles map, and the palace itself comes first because it has the strictest timed entry. I leave out times on the diagram: only the tour listings give durations, and they are for tours, not for each room.

2Royal ApartmentsThe State Apartments
3Hall of MirrorsWhere the Treaty of Versailles was signed
4Royal ChapelBuilt from 1699 to 1710
5The gardensFree November to March

7Petit Trianon and Queen's HamletThe estate's quiet corner
Entrance and Timed Slot
Entry to the palace is by time slot, and the official site says entry within half an hour of the slot is only guaranteed for tickets bought online, per my opening-hours guide. Be at the gate early, with a small bag. The skip-the-line guided tour is the way to save time in the queue, and I would pick it if you want a guide through the apartments.

“Our guide was clear and knowledgeable. Easy to follow.” – GetYourGuide review
The apartments are where the palace feels like a home for a court. Wikipedia says the court and government lived at Versailles from 6 May 1682 to 6 October 1789, apart from the Regency of 1715 to 1723. Inside the Palace of Versailles the Salon of Mars was used by the royal guards until 1782, per the same article. I could not confirm the current visitor route through these rooms, so follow the signs.
The Hall of Mirrors
This is the room people mean when they ask what is inside Palace of Versailles. The Treaty of Versailles that ended the First World War was signed here on 28 June 1919, according to Wikipedia and its sources disagree on when the hall was finished, so I do not give a date for that. It is crowded at midday, and a guide helps you read the room before you reach it. The Passport entry ticket lists access to the palace and the gardens, so you can enter the hall without a guide.
The Royal Chapel
The Royal Chapel was built from 1699 to 1710, per Wikipedia. It is a short stop on the way through, and one of the quieter rooms of the palace. The Royal Opera, begun in 1748 and completed in 1770, is a separate space that I could not confirm is open on a standard visit, so check the official site if that matters.
The Gardens
The gardens are the part of the Palace of Versailles map that most people underestimate. The official site says the gardens and park are open 8 am to 6 pm, free from November to March, and charged from April to October on Tuesday to Sunday, per the official page. André Le Nôtre was the royal gardener from 1657, per Wikipedia. One tour listing mentions the Grandes Eaux fountain show according to the calendar, and the official site notes that Tuesdays from May to June 2027 are devoted to musical gardens, so plan the date if the fountains matter to you.
A garden tour gives you the routes a map does not mark, and it is a different product from the palace tours.

The Trianon estate opens at noon from Tuesday to Sunday, per the official site, so it is the natural second half of the day. Wikipedia says Napoleon had the Grand Trianon restored and refurnished before his 1810 marriage. It is a long walk from the palace across the park, and the listing for the reserved-entry ticket says it includes access to the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon and the Queen’s Hamlet, along with the audio guide.

The Petit Trianon and the Queen’s Hamlet are named among the features of the estate in Wikipedia and the listing, though I did not find a source with details I could cite. I treat them as the quiet end of the Palace of Versailles map, which is why I put them last, where the crowds thin out. Bring comfortable shoes, because you will have walked a long way by now.
Getting Around Inside the Palace of Versailles: Access and Rules
A Palace of Versailles map only helps if you can walk it. The palace, the Grand Trianon and the Queen’s Hamlet are far apart, and I found no official walking time between them, so allow generous time and check the official site for any transport inside the park. Plan your lunch break for the middle of the day, between the apartments and the Trianon, because the Trianon estate opens at noon. If you only have half a day, take the palace and the gardens and leave the Trianon for another visit; the half-day guided tour I compared lasts 3 hours and combines the palace and the gardens.
The official page has an Accessibility for all section, but I could not read its details, so contact the palace before you go if you use a wheelchair or push a pushchair. For the story of the building, read my Palace of Versailles history page, and I compare each Palace of Versailles tour on its own. When you are ready to choose, every Palace of Versailles ticket I compared is in one place, and the home page lists the other attractions.
