St. Peter’s Basilica is open every day, from 7 am to 8 pm until 25 October 2026 and from 7 am to 7 pm from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027, according to the official site. Those are the St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours for the church; the dome keeps shorter hours. This guide covers the hours by day, free entry, the dress code, the best time to go and how to get there. If you want to book, my comparison of St. Peter’s Basilica tickets lists all 10 options with prices.
St. Peter’s Basilica Opening Hours
Today, Saturday 7 November 2026, the Basilica opening hours per Google Maps are 7 am to 7:10 pm. Across the week they look like this:
| Day |
Hours per Google Maps |
| Monday |
7 am to 7:10 pm |
| Tuesday |
7 am to 7:10 pm |
| Wednesday |
7 am to 7:10 pm |
| Thursday |
7 am to 7:10 pm |
| Friday |
7 am to 7:10 pm |
| Saturday |
7 am to 7:10 pm |
| Sunday |
7 am to 7:10 pm |
The official opening hours page is the one to trust. It splits the year in two: 7 am to 8 pm from 1 June to 25 October 2026, and 7 am to 7 pm from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027. Google Maps matches the winter St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours within ten minutes. The same page gives the dome as 7 am to 6 pm from 29 March to 25 October 2026 and 7:30 am to 5 pm in winter. It does not print a last-entry time for either, so I won’t invent one: arrive well before the St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours end.
St. Peter’s Basilica Operating Hours
The St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours for the other things inside the Basilica differ from the church itself. Per the official page, guided tours run Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm with last registration at 5 pm, and on Sundays and Vatican holidays from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm with last registration at 3 pm. The Pétros ení digital experience keeps the dome hours. I did not find hours for the Treasury Museum or the Necropolis on the pages I read, so check the product pages on the official site.
Two news headlines on the official site, “New opening hours for St Peter’s Basilica” (28 May 2026) and a postponement notice for 26 and 27 June, show that the hours do change. I read only the headlines, not the articles, so look at the news page before you travel.
Is St. Peter’s Basilica Open On Sunday
St. Peter’s Basilica is open on Sunday, and the St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours on Google Maps show the same 7 am to 7:10 pm as on any other day. The official page gives the Sunday hours for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, 7 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 7 pm, and for guided tours, 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. It also has a separate Holy Masses page, and a Mass can change how much of the church you can walk through. I did not read the Mass schedule, so I cannot tell you the times.
If you want a guide on a Sunday, the official tours run for two hours in the afternoon. The reseller tours I compared list their own start times at booking.
St. Peter’s Basilica Hours On Sunday
The St. Peter’s Basilica hours on Sunday are the same 7 am start as on a weekday, but the afternoon is where Sunday differs. Guided tours from the Fabbrica di San Pietro run only from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, against 9:30 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays. The official site calls these “Sundays and Vatican holidays”, so a holiday on a weekday follows the Sunday timetable for tours.
For the Basilica itself I found no Sunday exception on the pages I read. That is not a guarantee, and I would confirm on the day if a papal Mass or a feast falls on your date.
St. Peter’s Basilica Hours On Wednesday
On Wednesday, the St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours on Google Maps are 7 am to 7:10 pm, and the official hours page lists no Wednesday exception to the St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours. I could not verify whether a papal general audience on a Wednesday changes access, so I won’t claim a closure or its time. The mismatch to watch is the dome and the tours, which keep their own hours apart from the St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours.
If you have a Wednesday booking, read your confirmation email for the slot, since the official dome page says the Basilica entry is scheduled one hour before or after your dome time.
Can You Just Walk Into St. Peter’s Basilica
You can walk into St. Peter’s Basilica, but you cannot walk past the security check. The official entry page says: “Access to the Basilica begins with the security checks by the Italian State Police.” The stations are on the right side of St. Peter’s Square facing the Basilica, and visitors without a booking queue on the same side. A reserved slot is the way around the wait for a time, not around the check itself.
The tours say the same thing in their own words. The Touriks listing tells you not to go through the metal detectors before meeting your guide, and the GetYourGuide audio-app listing says you follow the signs for the online reservation entrance on Via di Porta Angelica.

“Unbelievable basilica!! The amount of art, statues, painting and marbles is amazing. Everything in there is priceless, of course was acquired from other church and from the colosseum. If I could describe it in one word it would be decadent” – GetYourGuide review
Is St. Peter’s Basilica Free
Entry to the Basilica is free: the GetYourGuide audio-app listing says “Basilica entry is free”, and the official booking page offers a free visit without a guide. What you pay for is a reserved time, the audio guide, a guide or an extra area. The Treasury Museum, the Necropolis, the dome and the Pétros ení experience each have their own product on the official site, and I could not read their prices.
The official visits page mentions free and reduced tickets for children and for some disabled visitors, but it is not clear which product those rules apply to, so I won’t quote them as Basilica rules. For the museums next door, tickets are a separate matter: see my Vatican Museums tickets comparison.
Best Time to Visit St. Peter’s Basilica
The best time to visit St. Peter’s Basilica is early, within the long opening hours, but I have no official crowd data, so I won’t name a quiet hour. What the data does show is the season. Open-Meteo’s 2025 record for the Vatican gives:

The queue for security and the dome stairs are the open-air parts, so sunshine matters for the wait. In winter the dome closes at 5 pm, which is close to sunset in November (4:49 pm), so a winter dome climb for the view needs a morning slot. That is arithmetic from the official hours and the weather record, not a crowd claim.
How to Get to St. Peter’s Basilica
Whatever the St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours, the walk from the metro is the longest part of the approach.
The Basilica is on St. Peter’s Square, about 3 minutes’ walk from the square itself by my estimate (straight-line distance multiplied by 1.3 at 4.8 km/h). Plan your St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours around the transit: the nearest metro stations in my data are Cipro, about 13 minutes on foot, and Ottaviano, about 14 minutes. The metro is run by ATAC Roma, and I did not verify which line serves which station here.
Meeting points depend on the tour: Largo del Colonnato 5 for both Touriks tours and the Scavi tour, Piazza della Città Leonina 2 for the KK Tour, Via del Mascherino 88 for Premium City Tour, and offices on Via Vespasiano or Via Mocenigo for the audio and museum products. Read your confirmation before you leave the hotel.

What to Know Before You Go
The dress rules come from two official pages. The rules page says excessively short clothing, sleeveless tops and hats are not allowed, and it also bans food and drink, smoking and pets, asks for low voices and silent phones, and asks visitors not to take photographs, even for personal use. The official visits page adds covered shoulders, trousers or skirts below the knee and small bags, because there is no cloakroom. Bulky equipment needs authorisation.
Time to allow, on top of the St. Peter’s Basilica opening hours, depends on what you book: the audio products run 1 to 2.5 hours, the guided Basilica tours 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and the museums-plus-Basilica tour 3 to 4 hours. The dome adds a queue: one listing says only 200 people are allowed to climb each hour and that the wait can be 10 to 120 minutes. For the wider Rome plan, the home page lists the other attractions I compare.
