The British Museum is open from 10 am, and Google Maps lists 5 pm as closing on every day except Friday, when it stays open until 8:30 pm. Entry is free. This guide covers the British Museum opening hours by day, the best time to go, how to get there and what to know at the door. If you want a guide through the galleries, my comparison of British Museum tickets lists 10 tours with prices.
British Museum Opening Hours
Today, Saturday 7 November 2026, the British Museum opening hours per Google Maps are 10 am to 5 pm. The full week looks like this:

| Tuesday |
10 am to 5 pm |
| Wednesday |
10 am to 5 pm |
| Thursday |

I could not open the museum’s own hours page when I wrote this, so I cannot give you the official last-entry time or the holiday closures. The official visit page is the one to trust, and I would check it for Christmas and New Year dates before you travel. Where the two differ, trust the museum.
The same applies to individual galleries. Some rooms close earlier or for rehanging, and the listings I compared warn that items can be on loan or in restoration, so a favourite object is not guaranteed to be on show.
British Museum Hours London
The British Museum opening hours in London are the same whichever way you search for them, and the thing that matters more than the closing time is the timed slot. General entry is free, and the museum asks you to book a free timed slot on britishmuseum.org. Wikipedia confirms the free-entry principle: like all UK national museums it charges no admission fee except for loan exhibitions.
So the opening time is the start of your window, not a promise that you can walk in at 10:00 sharp. The tours I compared handle this in different ways. One tells you the group must leave a meeting point at 9:45 am to make its entry slot for the museum, another sends your entry tickets by WhatsApp an hour before the tour, and a third says to arrive early because of the entrance queues.
British Museum Hours Today
The British Museum opening hours today follow the table above, and the answer changes only on a Friday. A Friday visit gives you roughly three and a half extra hours after the 5 pm closing time that applies on every other day. If you can only come after work, Friday is the day to aim for, subject to the official site confirming that the late opening runs on your date.
For a quick check of hours on the day, Google Maps is handy, but a tour booking with a fixed start time is more reliable than the closing time, because the guide meets you at a set point and the group goes in together.
British Museum Hours Sunday
On Sunday the British Museum opening hours per Google Maps are 10 am to 5 pm, the same as Monday to Thursday and Saturday. The British Museum opening hours on a Sunday suit a late start, and Sundays are the kind of day when a guided group is useful, because the guide leads you straight to the objects you want instead of leaving you to queue and wander. I can’t give you a crowd figure, since I found no published source for quiet or busy days.
British Museum Opening Hours Sunday and Friday Late
If you want the evening, it is Friday that matters, not Sunday. Google Maps shows 8:30 pm as the closing time that day. None of the guided tours I compared states an evening start, so a late-opening visit is something to do on your own, with the audio app that comes with the two Vox products at $7 and $9.
Best Time to Visit the British Museum
I can’t name the quietest day from a published source, so I will give you what the data supports. The museum is open daily, the earliest entry is 10 am, and the only late day is Friday. The practical advice, within the British Museum opening hours, is to take the first slot you can get, because the tours I compared that start early (the Spirit of Discovery tour leaves its meeting point at 9:45 am) get in when the building is at its calmest by design.
The weather matters less than at an open-air site, because the galleries are indoors, but it affects the walk and what you do afterwards. Open-Meteo’s 2025 record for London gives the picture:

November had 16 rainy days in that record, the most of any month, and the sun sets before 4:30 pm, so a museum day suits it well. In April and June you get long evenings, which makes a late afternoon in the museum followed by a walk to Covent Garden a good plan. For the British Museum in winter I’d book a morning slot and keep the afternoon for something indoors elsewhere.
How to Get to the British Museum
The nearest Underground station is Russell Square, about 450 m away in a straight line, which I estimate at a 7-minute walk (straight-line distance times 1.3 at 4.8 km/h). TfL lists it on the Piccadilly line. Tottenham Court Road is about 410 m away, also around 7 minutes, and Holborn and Goodge Street are about 9 minutes each. Covent Garden is roughly 12 minutes, Leicester Square 14 and Euston Square 14.
Three of the tours meet in or beside Russell Square: the Vox City Walks tour at the fountain, and the two Spirit of Discovery tours outside the station. Others meet inside the museum after the security check, on the stairs near the pillars, to the right of the information desk, or in front of the Starbucks near the main entrance. The address is Great Russell St, London WC1B 3DG, per Google Maps. Always read the meeting point in your confirmation, because it changes with the operator and the option.
Is the British Museum Worth It?
At the door it costs nothing, so the question is time, not money. Wikidata gives 1759 as the opening year and 5.8 million visitors a year, and the guided tours I compared are rated 4.1 to 4.9. The 2-hour small-group tour with priority entrance scores 4.9 from 1,715 reviews at $39, and the archaeologist-led tour 4.9 from 88 reviews at $57. Reviewers praise guides who pick specific objects across human history. I’d say yes if you choose what to see in advance, because the British Museum opening hours leave a long day.
British Museum Audio Guide
I found no audio guide on the museum’s own page, which I could not read, so check britishmuseum.org. What I can show is the third-party option: two Vox City tours include a one-hour express guided tour in English plus a one-hour self-guided tour with a downloadable multilingual audio app, at $7 and $9 on the listing. A reviewer says the guides made sure everyone had downloaded the audio before starting. Download it on Wi-Fi first, because the British Museum opening hours leave little spare time in a 2-hour slot.
British Museum Dress Code
I could not confirm a dress code from the official site, and none of the listings states one, so I won’t make one up. The museum is free, and the tours meet after the security check, which is the only rule they all share. I’d wear comfortable shoes, since the visit is long and on foot, and dress for the weather outside while the queue for the British Museum opening hours is in the open.
Things to Do Near the British Museum
Google Maps puts Trafalgar Square 1.27 kilometres away, rated 4.6 from 141,371 reviews, the London Eye 1.88 kilometres and the London Dungeon 1.96. Russell Square, where several tours meet, is beside the museum. See the British Museum map for the layout of the building.
What to Know Before You Go
Plan the day around the opening hours first and the objects second. The museum holds a very large collection, and the recurring highlights in the tour descriptions are the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures, the Egyptian mummies and the Sutton Hoo finds. Wikipedia records that the Rosetta Stone arrived in 1802 as a gift from King George III, and the museum’s first galleries opened to the public on 15 January 1759 in Montagu House. Seeing even half of that in a single visit is ambitious, which is why several reviewers of the tours say they would have been lost on their own.
Because I could not read the official page with the British Museum opening hours and rules, I won’t state the bag, security or dress rules as official ones. What the listings say is more limited: every tour tells you to pass the security check before meeting the guide, and the Vox products exclude cloakroom fees, so a cloakroom exists and may charge. The highlights tour excludes temporary exhibits, which fits Wikipedia’s note that loan exhibitions are the one thing the museum charges for.
Allow two hours inside the British Museum opening hours for a focused visit and longer if you add a gallery of your own. The guided tours I compared run 2 to 3 hours, and the archaeology course lasts 5.5 hours with lunch not included.
