A British Museum tour solves one problem: the building holds a huge collection and you have a couple of hours. Admission is free, so every British Museum tour on this page is priced for the guide alone, from $7 to $117. I compared ten guided tours and set out the route, languages, meeting point and what reviewers say about each one. If you only want to know how entry works, my guide to tickets for the British Museum explains the free timed slot.

2h British Museum Guided Tour with Priority Entrance
Without a guide you choose among galleries on your own, and the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon sculptures are often surrounded by crowds. A British Museum tour gives you a route, a story for each object and someone to answer questions. Wikipedia describes the permanent collection as roughly eight million objects, the largest in the world, per the museum’s Wikipedia entry. No two-hour tour comes near all of it.
What a tour does not do is change the price of admission, because there is none. The museum asks you to book a free timed slot on britishmuseum.org, and the listings below that include priority entry arrange the slot for you. The tours that list no ticket at all expect you to have one.
Standard Two-Hour British Museum Tours With Priority Entry
Five of the British Museum tours follow one pattern: a guide meets a group, walks the highlights for about 2 hours and leaves you inside to carry on alone.
Best Tours London is where I would start, because 1,715 reviews at 4.9 stars is the largest sample and the best score among tours with real volume. It costs $39 and offers headsets, the commentary is listed in English and Italian and the listing adds French, Greek and Chinese. The meeting point is inside the museum, on the right of the information desk next to the column, where the guide holds a yellow flag. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead. Reviewers like the guide’s stories and that the tour focuses on the essential pieces, and one said hundreds of people walking by made it hard to hear without earplugs or whispers.

My tour London sells two versions of nearly the same product. The $31 listing has 4.7 stars from 592 reviews, and the $33 one has 4.8 from 157, both for 2 hours in English, French, Italian and Spanish. Both ask you to meet on the stairs near the pillars after the security check, not outside the gates, and both send the tickets by WhatsApp about an hour before the tour or by email if you do not use it. I would take the $31 listing for its bigger review sample, and the $33 one reads the same.

“We loved our guide Elizabetta, very friendly, enthusiastic and engaging as well as very knowledgable. Highly reccomend.Fantastic day out & hopefully will meet again sometime.” – GetYourGuide review
UTG Experience London is cheaper at $22 for 2 to 3 hours, with a Thames cruise option in the title that I could not match to a route from the listing. The commentary is listed in seven languages, headsets come with groups of more than six, and the group meets on the stairs at the main entrance after security. Its score is 4.3 from 1,206 reviews, lower than the tours above, and the praise is for guide enthusiasm.

Paseando por Europa runs the Ancient Civilizations tour at $18 for 2 hours in Spanish and English. The group meets on the stairs to the main entrance on Great Russell Street, in front of Starbucks, after the security check, and the listing says to go early because of the entrance queues. Reviewers, 4.1 stars from 702, talk about a passionate guide, and one suggested an option for people already inside.

“It was a great tour! Just the right amount of information. Our guide was very friendly and informative! I recommend getting a guide for this museum to keep from being overwhelmed!” – GetYourGuide review
Two Vox City products are the cheapest British Museum tours here: $9 from Vox City International and $7 from Vox City Walks, which is the lowest price on this page. Both combine a one-hour express guided tour in English with a one-hour self-guided visit using a downloadable audio app in seven languages, and both include priority entry. The Vox City Walks listing also includes a donation to the museum. Neither includes the Bayeux tapestry or cloakroom fees.
The meeting points differ. Vox City Walks meets at the fountain in Russell Square, with the guide in a VoxCity uniform, and Vox City International varies by option. I would pick these for a short guided opener. The scores are 4.2 from 1,010 reviews and 3.9 from 254. One reviewer said the guide spoke too fast with an accent, and another praised how quickly the group got in and how well the guide found quiet spots.

“Alex was excellent and embodied the spirit of the museum. Excellent commentary.” – GetYourGuide review
Babylon Tours is the only listing that sells private and semi-private tours, which explains the price of $117. The tour runs 2.5 hours in English with a professional local guide, and the listing excludes temporary exhibits, gratuities and hotel pickup. The listing has two meeting points that depend on the option. Its 4.7 stars from 125 reviews are mostly about guides who covered the highlights efficiently, and one parent said the guide inspired their teenagers.

Spirit of Discovery runs two British Museum tours with an archaeologist guide, and they are the ones to look at if you want depth. The 2.5-hour tour costs $57 and has the best score of the ten, 4.9 from 88 reviews. The guide meets you at the entrance of Russell Square Station with a tablet showing Spirit of Discovery. The group has to leave promptly at 9:45 am to make its entry slot and cannot wait for latecomers.
The $80 archaeology course and tour lasts 5.5 hours, starts outside Russell Square Station and excludes lunch. Reviewers describe a structured course for history lovers, and one said the five hours flew by. Reviews of both tours name the same guide, so the experience depends on him.

“Brilliant. Rossa offers a top quality, well thought, clearly structured "course" which is an absolute delight for history lovers. An extraordinary experience with a huge learning and inspirational effect. Highly recommended.” – GetYourGuide review
In the 20 review texts I read for each listing, praise goes to the guide in nearly every case: knowledge, humour, a clear overview of a huge museum. The complaints are practical. They include noise from crowds, a guide who spoke too fast and a wish for an option to skip the first part for people already inside.
“Perfect if you doesnt have time to view all of the museums 80000 objects.”
— GetYourGuide reviewer
That tells me the operator matters less than the guide and the group size. A large review sample lowers the risk of drawing a poor guide.
Guided Tour or Free Entry Only?
The cost of the tour is the cost of the guide, since entry is free. The cheapest tour is $7 and the typical standard tour is $31 to $39, so I would count about $30 for a proper 2-hour guide. The museum also lists volunteer-led eye-opener tours in its search listing, described as free with a general admission ticket and lasting 30 to 40 minutes, per the museum’s visit pages. I could not open that page, so check it for times and subjects.
If you like to read labels and follow your own interests, skip the paid tour and book the free slot. If you have only two hours or want the stories behind the objects, a paid British Museum tour is worth it. The full set of options sits on my page about British Museum tickets.
How I’d Choose a British Museum Tour
First visit: Best Tours London at $39 for the review volume and score.
Best value: My tour London at $31.
Cheapest: Vox City Walks at $7 or Vox City International at $9, as a one-hour opener.
Spanish speakers: Paseando por Europa at $18.
Depth: the Spirit of Discovery archaeologist tour at $57, or the 5.5-hour course at $80.
Private or family group: Babylon Tours at $117.
Before you book, read my British Museum opening hours guide for the Friday late opening and the nearest stations. Russell Square, on the Piccadilly line per TfL, is the closest, and three tours meet there. The British Museum map shows what a route can cover, and the British Museum history page gives the background. The Rosetta Stone is the object nearly every guide starts with. For prices, my full list of British Museum tickets is the next stop, and my home page lists the other attractions I compare.
Frequently asked questions
Is a British Museum tour worth it?+
I think so for a first visit, because entry is free and the whole price pays for the guide. The most-reviewed tour, Best Tours London at $39, has 4.9 stars from 1,715 reviews, and reviewers repeatedly say a guide stopped them feeling overwhelmed by the size of the collection.
How long is a British Museum tour?+
Most of the tours I compared run 2 hours. The UTG and Vox City International listings say 2 to 3 hours, the Babylon Tours and Spirit of Discovery highlights tours run 2.5 hours, and the Spirit of Discovery archaeology course lasts 5.5 hours.
Is there a free British Museum tour?+
The museum's own listing in search results describes volunteer-led eye-opener tours that are free with a general admission ticket and last 30 to 40 minutes. I could not open the page to confirm times, so check britishmuseum.org on the day.
Do British Museum tours include the entry ticket?+
General admission is free, so the tours sell the guide, and several add a priority timeslot. Best Tours London, My tour London and the Vox products list priority entry. The Spirit of Discovery tours list entry, and the Babylon Tours listing does not mention a ticket.
What do British Museum tours show you?+
The listings name the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures, the Egyptian mummies, the Sutton Hoo finds and the Winged Bulls from Khorsabad. Each guide chooses a route, so ask the operator which galleries are on yours.
Can I book a private British Museum tour?+
Yes, one listing offers it. Babylon Tours sells private and semi-private options at $117, the highest price here, for 2.5 hours in English. The other nine listings are group tours.
