The Magic Fountain opening hours depend on the season: from 1 November to 31 March the City of Barcelona lists Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, with music and colour shows at 8.00 pm and 8.30 pm. Today is Saturday 7 November 2026 and the fountain is off, because the city says it is out of operation from 1 to 15 November for annual maintenance. This guide to the Magic Fountain opening hours covers the times, the best time to go and how to get there. If you want a guide or a tapas stop with the show, my Magic Fountain tickets page compares the two tours that include it.
Magic Fountain Opening Hours
The official schedule comes from the City of Barcelona show times page, and it reads very simply for the winter season. The fountain is not an every-night attraction, and the table shows the days.

The two sources differ by an hour. The city page says “from 8.00 pm to 9.00 pm” with shows at 8.00 and 8.30 pm, while Google Maps says 9 to 10 pm. When they disagree I trust the official site, but I’d still arrive a little before 8 pm. The city page gives no timetable for the other months, so I can’t tell you the summer hours; open the same page before an April to October trip.
Is the Magic Fountain Open
The Magic Fountain opening hours change with the calendar, so the first question is the date.
Not right now. The City of Barcelona notes that the fountain and the fountains along Eix Maria Cristina stay off from 1 to 15 November because of annual maintenance, with no displays. After that the next show nights are Thursday 19, Friday 20 and Saturday 21 November.
There is a second reason it can be dark. The fountain stopped for about three years, due to drought and later renovation works, and Nacio Digital reported on 24 September 2025 that water had returned on the day of the Mercè festival, with regular Thursday to Saturday shows set to resume on 2 October. Some GetYourGuide listings still say the fountain is off for drought, and I treat that as stale text, but I cannot prove it. Check the city page on the day, and if you have booked a tour, ask the operator.
Magic Fountain Show Times
The show times sit inside the wider Magic Fountain opening hours: two shows on each of three nights. On the city’s winter timetable, there are two music and colour shows on each show night, at 8.00 pm and 8.30 pm. That means you can arrive at 8 pm and see the first, or at 8.30 pm and see the second. The city page also mentions a heading for choreographies, which I could not read, so I can’t tell you what music plays. Wikipedia says the fountain was designed by Carles Buïgas and first performed on 19 May 1929, and that it includes film, classical and modern music in its programmes.
What Time Does Magic Fountain Close
The Magic Fountain opening hours end with the last show, and the city’s winter window finishes at 9.00 pm. In practice the last show starts at 8.30 pm. Google Maps pushes the evening to 10 pm, and I’d not rely on a late show without checking. The fountain is outdoors, in a public square, so there is no door that locks, but the water and lights stop when the show ends.
Magic Fountain Near Me
Whatever the Magic Fountain opening hours, the location is fixed. If you are in central Barcelona, the fountain stands at Plaça de Carles Buïgas 1, below the Palau Nacional in Montjuïc. From Plaça de Catalunya it is about 2.3 km in a straight line, which I estimate at 38 minutes on foot, so most people take the metro. Poble Sec is the closest residential area, about 0.83 km or 13 minutes by my estimate, and has a lively street of tapas bars.
Best Time to Visit the Magic Fountain
Match your evening to the Magic Fountain opening hours first, then to the weather. The best time is a show night, early enough to find a spot before 8 pm. The official source gives no crowd information, so I can’t name a quiet night. What I can say from the data is that the winter season starts after dark: Open-Meteo shows an average sunset of 17:31 in November and 17:22 in December, so the show is held in full darkness, which suits the lights.
The Magic Fountain opening hours do not move with the weather, but your enjoyment does. Weather is the other factor. In my Open-Meteo year, November had 4 rainy days, December 14, January 3, February 9 and March 18, so check the forecast for a Thursday to Saturday. Evenings are cooler than the daytime sunshine hours suggest, and I would bring a jacket.
Best Time to Visit Magic Kingdom
This suggestion is about Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Florida, not Barcelona, so I’m skipping it here. For the Montjuïc fountain, see the sections above; for the tours that pair the show with the castle, the late-afternoon departure times are on my tickets page.
How to Get to the Magic Fountain
The City of Barcelona points to the FGC and metro stop Espanya, on lines L1 and L3, and also lists the Ruta Vermella tourist bus, with stops at CaixaForum and Plaça d’Espanya. By my Google Maps data, Espanya is about 0.46 km from the fountain, roughly 8 minutes on foot (a straight-line distance multiplied by 1.3, at 4.8 km per hour). Poble Sec station is about 0.83 km, around 13 minutes, Hostafrancs 0.86 km and Tarragona 0.97 km, around 16 minutes.
Sants Estació, the main rail station, is about 1.37 km away, roughly 22 minutes on foot, which makes it a possible walk if you arrive by train. After the show, the metro near the square gets busy, so I’d walk to Poble Sec if you do not want to wait.
What to Know Before You Go
The Magic Fountain opening hours are the main thing to know. Entry to watch the show costs nothing as far as I found; the city page mentions no ticket. Two tours that include the show are on my tickets page, starting at $65, and each says the show depends on its schedule and operation. The $65 tour, with tapas, runs 3 hours and the $82 cable car and castle tour 5.5 hours.

“c'était une idée très originale beau concept bravo et surtout merci... je recommande à 100%” – GetYourGuide review
Plan around the Magic Fountain opening hours, not the ticket. Since the show runs just three nights a week in winter, a missed date means no fountain, and I would not book a tour for a Sunday to Wednesday evening. For more, read my tickets and prices comparison before you go.
Where to Stand and What to Bring
The city page does not recommend a viewing spot, so this part is my own reading of the layout rather than an official tip. The fountain sits at the head of Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina below the Palau Nacional, per Wikipedia, so the open space in front of it is where the crowd gathers. Arriving before the first 8.00 pm show is the simplest way to get a clear view, and the second show at 8.30 pm gives you a second chance if you are late.
Bring a jacket from November to March, a small bottle of water, and a phone with the city page bookmarked. The Magic Fountain opening hours can change at short notice for maintenance or drought, so a quick check on the day costs nothing. If you plan to eat first, Poble Sec is the closest neighbourhood in my data and is a short walk from the fountain, so a tapas dinner before the show fits the evening well.
For comparison, the other Barcelona sights I cover are further away. Casa Batlló is about 2.5 km from the fountain, Casa Milà 2.8 km and the Sagrada Familia 4.1 km in a straight line, so a show night works best as the end of a day on Montjuïc, not a side trip from the Eixample. My pages on Casa Batlló tickets and Sagrada Familia tickets cover those, and the home page lists every attraction I compare.
