The Vatican Museums are open from 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, with final entry at 6 pm, and they are closed on Sundays except for one free morning a month. That makes the Vatican Museums opening hours one of the tightest of any big Rome sight. This guide covers the hours by day, the closing dates, the best time to go, how to get there and the rules at the door. If you want the tickets, my comparison of Vatican Museums tickets lists all 10 options with prices.
Vatican Museums Opening Hours
Today, Saturday 7 November 2026, the Vatican Museums opening hours per Google Maps are 8 am to 8 pm. The Vatican Museums opening hours across the week look like this:

The official Vatican Museums opening hours sit on the official hours page and it is the one to trust. It matches: Monday to Saturday 8 am to 8 pm with final entry at 6 pm. It adds that visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing. The same page gives the last Sunday of each month as 9 am to 2 pm, with final entry at 12:30 pm.
Vatican City Opening Hours
Vatican City opening hours depend on what you want to see, because the city state is not one attraction. The Vatican Museums opening hours on this page are for the Vatican Museums, which include the Sistine Chapel. St. Peter’s Basilica has its own schedule, and I did not read it, so check the Vatican’s official site for the date you plan to go. Several of the tours I compared add the Basilica, and the City Wonders listing says it is not accessible on Wednesday mornings.
A reviewer of the Crown Tours listing wrote that the Basilica part of their November 2026 tour was removed because of a papal mass. That is one traveller’s report, but it tells you the Basilica is the part of a Vatican day most likely to change at short notice.
Vatican City Opening Times
The Vatican City opening times for the museums come with a timed entry, so the Vatican Museums opening time is only the start of your window. Skip-the-line tickets carry a reserved time, and the Tours And Tours listing says the ticket is valid only for that time, that you should arrive 15 minutes early, and that latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line entry. Once you are inside you can explore until closing.
The official page also lists a few temporary closures with no year given: all sectors on 10 November from 8 to 9 am, and the Sistine Chapel on 4 and 18 December from 6 to 8 pm. They fall in the coming weeks, but since the page does not give the year I would confirm them on the site before you plan around them.
Vatican Museum Working Hours
The Vatican Museums opening hours include a calendar of closing dates, and it is longer than most visitors expect. Per the official hours page, the museums are closed on Sundays (except the last of the month), 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December. The page does not label the dates with a year, and it links a calendar PDF for 2026 to 2027, so use that for your trip.
For planning, the useful lesson is that a trip around a Catholic holiday can lose a day of Vatican Museums opening hours. The free last Sunday is also cancelled when it lands on Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December, according to the same page.
Is the Vatican Museum Open On Sunday
The Vatican Museums opening hours on a Sunday are limited to one morning a month: the last Sunday, from 9 am to 2 pm, with final entry at 12:30 pm. Admission is free that day, per the official tickets page, and guided tours can be booked ahead. Google Maps shows Sunday as closed in its weekly Vatican Museums opening hours because it lists the normal week.
I would expect those free mornings to be busy, but I have no figures, so I won’t give you one. If you want a Sunday with a guide, the official page is the place to start, and the reseller tours I compared run Monday to Saturday.

Most of the Vatican Museums is indoors, so rain matters less than at an open-air site, but queues and the walk from the metro are outside. June had 2 rainy days and 14 sunshine hours in the record, and March had 17 rainy days. I have no official crowd data by month, so I will not claim that any month is quieter. My own rule is to book a timed slot first and pick the date around it.
Best Time of Day to Visit Vatican City
The best time of day within the Vatican Museums opening hours is, on the evidence I have, either end of the opening window. The museums open at 8 am and take final entry at 6 pm, and the official page publishes no crowd levels, so I will not invent a quiet hour. What the listings do show is how the tickets use time: the Enjoy Rome tour lasts about 2 hours, the Brastours tour 3 hours, and the open tickets are valid for 24 hours.
If you book a timed slot, the practical rule is to choose the earliest one you can reach comfortably. Arriving at the 8 am opening also protects you from the 6 pm final entry, which leaves under two hours before the halls clear. That is arithmetic from the official hours, not a crowd claim.
How to Get to the Vatican Museums
The nearest metro station is Ottaviano, about 0.5 km from the museums in a straight line, which is roughly an 8-minute walk by my estimate (straight-line distance multiplied by 1.3 at 4.8 km/h). The Real Barcelona Tours and Vivicos listings both name Ottaviano on Line A for their meeting point. Cipro is the next station, about 9 minutes on foot, and the metro is run by ATAC Roma.
Two bus stops called V.Le Vaticano/Musei Vaticani sit within 1 to 2 minutes of the museums on Google Maps. The Roma S. Pietro railway station is about 19 minutes on foot. Meeting points vary by tour: Via Germanico for Tours About and Tours And Tours, Via Mocenigo for Crown Tours, Via Santamaura for Brastours and Via Tunisi for City Wonders. Read the confirmation before you leave your hotel.

“Zara was very engaging . As returning guests with some knowledge about the exhibits we still learned a lot of new information. Pace was great and time flew by.” – GetYourGuide review
Vatican Museums Audio Guide
The first listing in my comparison, the 2-hour Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s tour at $55, is rated 4.3 from 87,007 reviews, and one reviewer did the visit on their own with an audio guide. The guided listings give you a guide with headsets instead. A second reviewer needed a hotspot to download two apps for the audio guide, so download any app on Wi-Fi before you queue. I could not confirm an official audio guide price, so check museivaticani.va. For a live guide, see the Vatican Museums tours, and plan around the Vatican Museums opening hours of 8 am to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday.
Vatican Museums Dress Code
The dress code is enforced. The official visitor advice page says entry is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors: sleeveless or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted. Large bags, rucksacks and suitcases go in the free cloakroom, and umbrellas, tripods, selfie sticks and drones are not allowed. The same dress code applies to the Sistine Chapel, which you reach through the museums, and the Vatican Museums opening hours leave no time to go back and change.
What to Know Before You Go
Per the official visitor advice page, entry is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors: sleeveless or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted. Large bags, rucksacks and suitcases go in the free cloakroom, and the page gives no exact size limit. Security uses a metal detector, and umbrellas of medium and large size, tripods, selfie sticks and drones are not allowed. Eating and drinking are not allowed in the halls.
Tickets matter too. The official site says tickets cannot be refunded and are valid only on the day they are issued, and that tickets.museivaticani.va is the only official online seller. Children under 7 enter free, and reduced tickets exist for students. For the full price list, see my Vatican Museums tickets comparison.
Time to allow depends on the ticket, and on the Vatican Museums opening hours. The guided tours I compared last 2 to 3 hours, and one reviewer of the open ticket wrote that you will spend around 4 hours inside to enjoy it properly. The Vatican also serves the wider Rome trip, and the home page lists the other attractions I compare.
