Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica Tour

A Vatican Museums tour is the one way to see the museums with a person choosing the route for you, and that matters in a building that takes hours to cross. I compared six guided Vatican Museums tours, from $49 to $77. Four add St. Peter’s Basilica, two stay inside the museums and the Sistine Chapel, and one of those uses a guide from the museums themselves. If you want the entry on its own, my guide to Vatican Museums tickets covers every option.

What a Vatican Museums Tour Adds Over a Plain Ticket

The official site sells the full ticket at 20 euros, or 25 euros with the 5 euro online skip-the-line booking, per the official prices and tickets page. A guided Vatican Museums tour builds on that entry: a licensed guide, headsets so you can hear in the crowds, and a route that reaches the Sistine Chapel without you reading signs. Most also bundle the Basilica, which is a separate site with its own security line.

What a tour does not do is change the building. The visitor information on the official site still sets the hours, and the museums are busy at most times of day.

Vatican Museums Tour With St. Peter’s Basilica

Four tours package the museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica. They are the ones I would start with.

Enjoy Rome is the most-reviewed Vatican Museums tour by a wide margin: $55, about 2 hours, 4.3 stars from 87,007 reviews. It meets at the Tours About office on Via Germanico 8, and it runs in Spanish, French, Italian, German and English. The listing includes skip-the-line access to the museums and the Sistine Chapel, and to the Basilica only if you select that option. The route names the Pio Clementino museum, the Belvedere Courtyard, the Candelabra, Tapestries and Maps galleries and the Sistine Chapel. Reviewers praise guides who handled the crowds and paced the visit.

“We had a fantastic time on our guided tour of the Vatican museum, Sistine Chapel & St Peter’s Basilica. Our guide Lilian was very friendly and knowledgeable. The fact we could skip the queues was a real bonus.” – GetYourGuide review

Crown Tours is the one I would book for a first visit at $66: 4.7 from 19,499 reviews, the best rating of the six. It lasts 2 to 4 hours depending on the option, runs in six languages and meets at the office on Via Mocenigo 15, about 2 minutes from the museum exit. The listing offers skip-the-security entry to the Basilica and a pre-reserved Dome access with an elevator to the terrace on selected options. One caution from a reviewer: the Basilica part of their tour was removed because of a pop-up papal mass, so the Basilica is the part least in your control.

Brastours costs $77 for 3 hours, in English and Spanish, and its included list names a skip-the-line ticket for each of the three sites: the museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica. It meets at Via Santamaura 28, hands out an illustrated Sistine Chapel factsheet and uses the official Vatican headsets. The route adds the Laocoon, and a reviewer said the guide answered every question and left time for photos, which is useful on the longest of the Vatican Museums tours.

City Wonders also costs $77 but takes 2 hours, in English only, with an art historian guide. It is the one that spells out its rules: the Basilica is not included on its No Basilica options and is not accessible on Wednesday mornings, and the dome climb needs a separate ticket bought on site if available. Cancellation is free up to 2 days ahead, longer than on the others. It meets at the steps next to Caffe Vaticano at Via Tunisi 4.

Vatican Museums Tour With Sistine Chapel Only

Tours About is the cheapest Vatican Museums tour at $49. It lasts 2.5 hours, runs in five languages and lists skip-the-line entry to the museums and the Sistine Chapel, plus a guide, headsets and a bathroom at the meeting point. The St. Peter’s Basilica is not included. It has two meeting points depending on the option, one on Via Germanico 8, so read your voucher. It scores 4.3 from 12,103 reviews. Reviewers praise the guides for steering through the crowds, and some found the museums hectic and one found the humour repetitive.

Vatican Museums Tour With an Official Guide

The tour with an official Vatican guide costs $52 and is non-refundable. It lists the skip-the-line entrance, the museum ticket and a guide from the museums, and it runs in Spanish, French, English and Italian. St. Peter’s Basilica is not included and the listing says it is not wheelchair accessible. The meeting point is the thing to know: go through security first, then find the sign reading VISITE GUIDATE. Several reviewers say the instructions are confusing, and one waited in an unnecessary line.

Do Reviewers Agree on Vatican Museums Tours?

On the guide, yes. In the eight reviews I read for each Vatican Museums tour, nearly every one praises the guide’s knowledge, humour or patience with the crowds. The complaints are not about the guides: crowds in the galleries, a meeting point that is hard to find, and an Italian English accent on one Crown Tours guide.

Despite huge crowds in the museum she made sure we could see and hear her.
— GetYourGuide reviewer

Guided Vatican Museums Tour or Ticket Only?

The cheapest Vatican Museums ticket on my tickets page is the $32 Tours And Tours skip-the-line entry. The cheapest guided Vatican Museums tour is Tours About at $49, so the guide costs $17 more. The official 25 euro ticket with online booking is the baseline, and the $32 reseller entry is close to it. If you want a guide, that gap is small for what it buys. If you plan to read the signs and take the Sistine Chapel at your own pace, the ticket is enough. See Vatican Museums tickets for how the entries compare.

Small Group, Private or Standard Vatican Museums Tours

The listings rarely state a group size. The official-guide listing says you join a small group, but gives no number. I found no private Vatican Museums tour among the six. If group size matters to you, ask the operator before booking.

How I’d Choose a Vatican Museums Tour

Before you book, check the Vatican Museums opening hours, because closing days and last entry vary. My Vatican Museums map shows the route a guide takes through the galleries. When you are ready, the full list of tickets for the Vatican Museums is the next step, and the home page lists the other attractions I compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Vatican Museums tour worth it?

I think so for a first visit, because the museums are large and crowded and a guide picks a route through them. The six guided tours I compared cost $49 to $77 against $32 for a skip-the-line entry ticket. Reviewers of the most-reviewed tour, Enjoy Rome with 87,007 reviews, praise guides who kept the group together despite huge crowds.

How long is a Vatican Museums tour?

Most listings say 2 to 3 hours: Enjoy Rome and City Wonders 2 hours, Tours About 2.5 hours and Brastours 3 hours. Crown Tours says 2 to 4 hours depending on the option, and the official-guide tour lists a day. Allow time on top for the meeting point and security.

Does a Vatican Museums tour include St. Peter's Basilica?

Four of the six do, in some or all options: Enjoy Rome, Crown Tours, Brastours and City Wonders. The Tours About tour and the official-guide tour do not include the Basilica. City Wonders also says the Basilica is not accessible on Wednesday mornings.

Which Vatican Museums tour has an official guide?

The tour listed without an operator name, at $52, says its guide is an official guide of the Vatican Museums. It scores 4.4 from 6,949 reviews, is non-refundable, and meets inside the museums after security under a sign reading VISITE GUIDATE.

Where do Vatican Museums tours meet?

Mostly in an office or at steps near the museums, not at the gate. Enjoy Rome and Tours About use the office on Via Germanico 8, Crown Tours uses Via Mocenigo 15, Brastours uses Via Santamaura 28 and City Wonders meets at the steps next to Caffe Vaticano on Via Tunisi 4.

Is a Vatican Museums tour wheelchair accessible?

Not reliably. The official-guide listing says the route is not wheelchair accessible, and an Enjoy Rome reviewer with a child in a wheelchair did the visit alone with an audio guide. Ask the operator before booking if access matters.
