Montserrat Monastery Tickets – Montserrat Monastery, Easy Hike, Cable Car

The cheapest Montserrat Monastery ticket on GetYourGuide is the $28 entry ticket with the Escolania boys’ choir, and the most reviewed option is the $78 small-group trip from Barcelona with 4.9 stars from 1,352 reviews. The monastery’s own site also sells tickets for non-residents, but I could not read its prices. For a first visit from Barcelona I’d book the $78 trip.

I compared all 9 Montserrat Monastery tickets and tours you can book on GetYourGuide right now, and every one is in the table above. Only one is a plain entry ticket. The other eight are day trips from Barcelona that bundle a van or bus, a guide and usually a hike, so they are Montserrat Monastery tickets plus the journey. Prices are in US dollars from the listings, checked in November 2026. The links that open GetYourGuide are affiliate links (more on that on my about page).

Montserrat is a mountain monastery about an hour from Barcelona, not a city sight, so the first question is how you get there. I answer that below with the Montserrat Monastery tickets that solve it, and the opening hours and visitor guide has the detail.

Montserrat Monastery Tickets at a Glance

Here is every ticket type for Montserrat Monastery in one table, so you can see where the money goes before the detail.

What Details
Ticket types 1 entry ticket without transport, 8 day tours from Barcelona with transport, 1 of them also stopping in Sitges
Price range $28 (entry with the boys’ choir) to $92 (Sitges and Montserrat, 9 hours)
Areas by type The entry ticket lists the Basilica, the Throne of the Virgin, the Escolania choir, the museum and the audiovisual space; the day tours list the monastery visit and most add a hike, a funicular or a cable car
Official ticket Non-residents buy a tourist ticket for the Atrium, Basilica and Camarín on montserratvisita.com; I could not read the price
Time to allow 6 to 6.5 hours on most day tours, 9 hours with Sitges, 24 hours of validity on the entry ticket
Address Montserrat, 08199 Montserrat, Barcelona (per Google Maps)
Google Maps hours 7 am to 8 pm every day, 4.7 stars from 61,023 reviews

What separates these Montserrat Monastery tickets is transport and extras, not the basilica itself. The monastery is the same building whichever ticket you hold. The differences are who drives you, who explains it, and whether the funicular or cable car to the upper trails is in the price.

Montserrat Monastery Tickets and Prices

The $78 Mont Escape Tours trip is the one I’d start with when comparing Montserrat Monastery tickets and prices, because it has the most reviews by a wide margin: 4.9 stars from 1,352. It lasts 6 hours, runs as a small group in two vans of no more than 8 people each, and lists a certified guide, a cable car ride, air-conditioned transport and parking fees. You meet at 8:00 AM at Passeig de Gràcia 69 in Barcelona, and the guides speak Spanish, Catalan and English.

The listing does not name a monastery entry fee as a separate line, so check the listing for how the monastery visit is covered. The description mentions the 15th-century cloister and an easy hike, and the cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Skip-the-Line Montserrat Monastery Tickets

Skip-the-line Montserrat Monastery tickets here means a tour that comes with the monastery entry and a guide who handles it, so one of these Montserrat Monastery tickets replaces queuing at the desk. The UNIque Tours Barcelona trip costs $76, lasts 6 hours and has 4.9 stars from 1,137 reviews, so it is the second most reviewed. It lists a return transfer, the monastery entry fee, a funicular ticket and walking poles. The meeting point is at Passeig de Gràcia 29 at 8:00 AM, and the guide waits at the benches. The guides cover German, Spanish, English, Basque and Catalan.

Of all the Montserrat Monastery tickets with a hike, I count it as the best value: $2 less than the leader and a funicular in the price. Tips and hotel pick-up are not included, and a reviewer says the timing let them miss the large crowds.

Montserrat Monastery Tour

A Montserrat Monastery tour with entry is worth it when you want the history explained, since the basilica and the Black Madonna make much more sense with a guide. The Alan Nicol tour is the only guided tour I would call a pure monastery-and-park day: $84, 6.5 hours, a perfect 5.0 from 111 reviews. It lists transport, access to the Basilica and funicular tickets, and runs in French, English, Spanish and Catalan. You meet in front of Dolce and Gabbana opposite Casa Milà. Two reviewers say they were the only guests that day, which felt like a private tour, but that is luck, not a promise. I compare every guided tour on my Montserrat Monastery tours page.

The other tour in this group is a bus day trip from Jessica De Lima Descovi, which has no reviews yet and is the cheapest van-free option I found at $77. It lists a round-trip bus transfer, a 45-minute guided tour of the Basilica and Monastery, and free time that you can use for a hike, lunch or the museum. Museum entry and the all-you-can-eat lunch are optional add-ons. The listing says 6 hours, but its own timetable runs from 8:30 to 17:00, so budget the longer day. It meets at Avinguda del Marquès de l’Argentera, in front of the station.

Montserrat Abbey Tickets

Montserrat abbey tickets are the same thing as tickets for Montserrat Monastery: Santa Maria de Montserrat is a Benedictine abbey, and the Google Maps entry for it is categorised as an abbey and monastery. The official site says that since May 2023 non-residents pay a tourist ticket for the Atrium, Basilica and Camarín chapel, with exceptions for people attending religious services, residents of Catalonia, the rest of Spain and the EU (except groups and organised trips), and guests of the mountain’s accommodation, per montserratvisita.com. I could not read the ticket price, so check that page.

Among the Montserrat Monastery tickets with a guide, Catalan Trails sells the abbey visit at $85 for 6.5 hours, and its listing names a skip-the-line admission ticket, a guided visit of the monastery and a guided hike in the natural park. The Sant Joan funicular ticket is included when you pick that option, and the guides speak English and Spanish. It has 4.9 stars from 206 reviews.

Is Montserrat Worth It

Before you buy Montserrat Monastery tickets, ask what you want from the day. I think Montserrat is worth it if you want mountains and a working monastery in one day, and less so if you only want a quick sight. The monastery was founded in 1025 and rebuilt between the 19th and 20th centuries, and about 70 monks still live in the community, per Wikipedia. The mountain is a multi-peaked range with the main peaks Sant Jeroni, Montgrós and Les Agulles. That combination is what the hikes sell.

Among the Montserrat Monastery tickets, the semi-private UNIque Tours trip is the best answer to the worth-it question if you dislike crowds: a maximum of 8 guests, $73, 6 hours, 4.9 from 92 reviews. It lists the monastery entrance fee, a round trip in a private van, a certified hiking guide and poles. The drive from Barcelona is about 50 minutes according to the listing.

Montserrat Ticket Price

The cheapest of the Montserrat Monastery tickets is $28 for the monastery-run entry ticket with the Escolania boys’ choir, and it is the only product here that is a plain ticket. It lists access to the Basilica, a visit to the Throne of the Virgin, the singing of the boys’ choir, an audio guide, a map, a booklet, access to the audiovisual space and entry to the Museum of Montserrat. It is valid for 24 hours, but transport from Barcelona is not included. It has 4.5 stars from 156 reviews, the lowest rating here, and one reviewer advises arriving early to be near the front for the choir. The description says the time chosen is the 1 PM choir slot.

“Superb singing and interesting dress for the choirboys. A mystical experience.” – GetYourGuide review
Superb singing and interesting dress for the choirboys. A mystical experience.

One reviewer says they would take the combined transport and visit ticket and add the choir, which the monastery site sells. That is the cheaper route if you are happy with the train.

Montserrat Monastery Tickets Online

You can buy Montserrat Monastery tickets online (and tickets for Montserrat Monastery in person at the station) from the monastery’s visitor site or from GetYourGuide. The official FAQ says non-residents find the ticket combinations on montserratvisita.com, that bookings can be made a month in advance, and that where a package includes the Throne of Our Lady, the time you book is the Throne’s time and you can do the rest of the visit before or after it. Packages that include the train must be collected at the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat station at Plaça Espanya in Barcelona, which is open from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The two ways to reach the mountain without a tour are the rack railway and the Aeri cable car. The monastery site says hourly trains from Barcelona link up with both. The cable car costs 10 euros one way and 15 round trip for adults in 2026, per Aeri de Montserrat, and the rack railway operator lists 1 hour 30 minutes from Barcelona by public transport on Turistren. A tour avoids that planning, which is what you pay for in the dearer Montserrat Monastery tickets.

Is Montserrat Monastery Worth Visiting

Is Montserrat Monastery worth visiting, and are its tickets worth it, if you are already based in Sitges? The Mont Escape Tours trip combines both for $92 and 9 hours, with 4.9 stars from 80 reviews. It lists a certified guide, a small group, air-conditioned transport, entry fees and parking, and the description says it includes the monastery, basilica and atrium plus an easy hike to St Michael’s cross before heading to Sitges. Lunch in Sitges is not included. One reviewer who stayed in Sitges caught an early train to Barcelona to join the tour and said it was a big day but worth it.

With these Montserrat Monastery tickets the cost is time rather than money, so I’d pick it only when you want the sea town as well. For a mountain-only day, a shorter trip is better.

“Very informative tour! We loved it. Thank you, James for providing such good tour. We will visit again.” – GetYourGuide review

Is Montserrat Expensive

Montserrat gets expensive mainly through transport and extras, not the monastery entry itself. Transport, a guide and a funicular make up most of a $73 to $92 tour. Catalan Trails sells a hike with the Sant Joan funicular one way at $85 for 6.5 hours, with a private air-conditioned minivan, a skip-the-line admission ticket, a guided tour of the monastery, a guided hike, hiking poles and a water refill. It has 4.9 stars, from 69 reviews, and meets in front of Five Guys on Passeig de Gràcia.

On your own the funicular and cable car add up quickly: the cable car alone is 15 euros round trip for an adult. That is why I find the all-in Montserrat Monastery tickets fair value when you want the upper trails.

“Great trip, very nice to see and experience. Fantastic guide” – GetYourGuide review

Is Montserrat Monastery Catholic

Yes, Montserrat Monastery is Catholic. It is an abbey of the Order of Saint Benedict, and it shelters the image of the Virgin of Montserrat, the Black Madonna, according to Wikipedia. The Sanctuary is a place of worship before it is a sight, and that shapes your visit: the Basilica is open from 7 am to 8 pm, convent mass and other services take priority, and the official site says capacity control keeps the Basilica quiet for prayer. Treat it as a church first and a sight second.

The abbey is a living community, so the monastery’s own rules decide what visitors may enter. I found no dress code on the pages I read, so check the official site before you go. No Montserrat Monastery ticket above changes that.

Opening Hours and Getting There

The Basilica is open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm per the official timetable, and the choir sings at 13:00 on weekdays. Trains from Barcelona leave from Plaça Espanya. My guide to Montserrat Monastery opening hours covers the museum, the Throne of Our Lady, the best time to go and how to get there.

Which Ticket Fits You

The right Montserrat Monastery tickets depend on your budget, whether you want a guide and how you reach the mountain. This table puts all the tickets for Montserrat Monastery side by side.

Near Montserrat Monastery

Almost nothing in my Google Maps data for this page is near Montserrat. The abbey sits on the mountain, and the Barcelona sights below are 33 to 37 km away in a straight line, which is a ride of about an hour, not a walk. I give straight-line figures and not travel times. On the mountain itself I only have the abbey, and the funiculars, the Santa Cova and the museum are covered in the visitor guide.

The Sagrada Familia is about 35 km away, Park Güell about 33 km, Casa Batlló about 35 km, La Pedrera about 35 km, and the Cathedral of Barcelona about 37 km. These are the sights people pair with a Montserrat day.

If you build a longer trip around your Montserrat Monastery tickets, I compare the Sagrada Familia tickets, Park Güell tickets, Casa Batlló tickets and Casa Milà tickets on this site. Since Montserrat takes most of a day, I’d keep those for another morning.

How I’d Choose

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy tickets to the Montserrat Monastery?

The monastery's visitor site, montserratvisita.com, sells the official tourist tickets for non-residents and says combinations are listed there. On GetYourGuide I compared 9 products, from a $28 entry ticket to $92 day tours from Barcelona. Official prices were not readable for me, so check that site for your date.

Do I have to pay to enter Montserrat Monastery?

Mostly yes for visitors from outside the EU. Since May 2023 the monastery has charged a tourist ticket for the Atrium, Basilica and Camarín. It is waived for people attending religious services, residents of Catalonia, the rest of Spain and EU countries (except groups), and guests staying on the mountain. Check the official page for the current price.

How much time do I need at Montserrat Monastery?

The day tours I compared run 6 to 6.5 hours from Barcelona, and 9 hours when Sitges is added. The $28 entry ticket is valid for 24 hours and has no fixed length. If you travel alone by rack railway, the operator lists about 1 hour 30 minutes each way from Barcelona by public transport, so I'd plan most of a day.

What time does the Escolania boys' choir sing?

The Escolania's own calendar shows the Salve and Virolai at 13:00 on weekdays in November 2026, with Sunday singing at the 11:00 Conventual Mass, and reservation required. The monastery says the choir is on holiday after St John's Day until the end of August, after Christmas and in Easter Week.

Is it better to take the rack railway or the cable car to Montserrat?

Both reach the monastery from the foot of the mountain. The rack railway goes to the heart of the Sanctuary and runs all year; the Aeri cable car costs 10 euros one way or 15 round trip for adults in 2026, per its fares page. A day tour handles the transport, so you choose only if you travel alone.

Are Montserrat day trips from Barcelona worth the price?

They cost $73 to $92 for 6 to 9 hours with transport, a guide and usually a hike, against $28 for entry only. If you want a guide, a van from Barcelona and the funicular included, the tours are fair value. If you plan to use the train, the $28 ticket is the cheaper way in.

Is Montserrat Monastery a Catholic monastery?

Yes. Wikipedia describes Santa Maria de Montserrat as an abbey of the Order of Saint Benedict, founded in 1025, with a community of around 70 monks and the image of the Virgin of Montserrat. It is a working abbey, which is why religious services take priority in the Basilica.
