A Montserrat Monastery tour answers a practical question before a historical one: how do you get a group of people from Barcelona to a mountain sanctuary and back in one day? I compared the three guided tours that go there, from $77 to $92. Each one leaves from central Barcelona and each has a different idea of the day: a monastery and park outing, a bus trip with free time, and a long combination with the seaside town of Sitges. If you want the entry without a guide, my guide to Montserrat Monastery tickets covers every option, including the hiking tours I do not repeat here.
Montserrat is a working Benedictine abbey. Wikipedia describes Santa Maria de Montserrat as founded in 1025, with a community of around 70 monks and the image of the Virgin of Montserrat, per the Montserrat Abbey entry. A guide adds the story: why the Black Madonna matters, what the Basilica contains and why the mountain looks the way it does. The monastery itself charges a tourist ticket for the Atrium, Basilica and Camarin to most non-EU visitors since May 2023, according to the visitor site montserratvisita.com, and the guided tours here handle that entry as part of the price.
The other thing a tour adds is the travel. A day trip means one pickup in the centre and one drop-off, instead of working out the rack railway or cable car. For those timetables, see the Aeri de Montserrat fares page.
Montserrat Monastery Tour With Funicular
Alan Nicol is the guide I would book first. His Montserrat Monastery and Natural Park tour costs $84 and lasts 6.5 hours. It scores a perfect 5.0 from 111 reviews and runs in French, English, Spanish and Catalan. Transport, access to the Basilica and funicular tickets are on the included list, and food, drinks and gratuities are not. You meet in front of Dolce and Gabbana, opposite Casa Mila on Passeig de Gracia 95, in the Eixample.
The route in the listing is the monastery and the national park, and the description names the Benedictine Abbey, the throne of the Black Madonna, the Basilica and the mountain’s flora and fauna. Reviewers praise the guide above all. Two of them were the only guests that day, so it felt like a private tour, and another liked how he kept their 5-year-old interested by spotting goats. That is luck rather than a promise. One reviewer calls the funicular ride “not to be missed”.

“Montserrat was beautiful! Our guide Alan did so much to make the day enjoyable with his knowledge, passion for the area and patience with our family. Very highly recommend!” – GetYourGuide review
The bus trip run by Jessica De Lima Descovi costs $77 and is the cheapest of the three. It lists a round-trip bus transfer from Barcelona, a guided history tour of the monastery and free time, with an English-speaking host, English and Spanish as languages and all photo stops. It has no reviews yet, so I cannot tell you how it feels.
What the listing does give is a timetable: you meet at 8:30, the bus leaves at 9:00, you arrive at 10:15 for photo stops and a 45-minute guided visit, free time starts at 11:30, you meet at the bus at 15:30 and you are back in Barcelona at 17:00. The free time can go on a hike, lunch or the museum. Breakfast, the optional all-you-can-eat lunch, museum entry and hotel pickup are not included. The meeting point is Avinguda del Marques de l’Argentera, in front of the station, where the host holds a red umbrella.

The long option combines Montserrat and the seaside town of Sitges in 9 hours for $92, run by Mont Escape Tours. It scores 4.9 from 80 reviews, runs in Spanish, Catalan and English, and is a small group in an air-conditioned van with a certified guide. Entry fees and parking are included, but lunch in Sitges is not. Pickup is at 8:00 AM at Passeig de Gracia 69, in front of a Benetton shop.
The description puts the monastery, basilica and atrium first, then an easy hike to the cross of Sant Miquel, then a walk along the Sitges promenade. Reviewers like the guides’ knowledge. One found the explanations long at times and the van warm, another was staying in Sitges and caught an early train to join. A hilly hike in the sun is something to plan for.

Timing a Montserrat Monastery Tour Around the Choir
Many visitors want to hear the Escolania boys’ choir, and none of the three listings says that a Montserrat Monastery tour includes it. The choir publishes its own calendar at escolania.cat, with singing on a fixed schedule and holiday breaks, so compare it with your tour’s free time before you book. The bus tour’s timetable leaves roughly four hours at the mountain, which is the most flexible window of the three.
Do Reviewers Agree on Montserrat Monastery Tours?
On the two listings with reviews, yes: guides. The eight reviews I read on each name and praise their guide for knowledge and patience. The complaints are small, a warm van and long explanations on the Sitges trip. I could not find any on Alan Nicol’s tour.
“The funicular ride to the top is not to be missed.”
— GetYourGuide reviewer
Guided Montserrat Monastery Tour or Ticket Only?
The one plain entry on my page of Montserrat tickets is the monastery-run ticket with the Escolania boys’ choir at $28, and it is valid for 24 hours. That means a guided Montserrat Monastery tour at $77 to $92 costs $49 to $64 more, and the gap buys the transport, the guide and, on some listings, the funicular. The ticket does not include travel from Barcelona. If you are comfortable with the train and want to hear the choir, the ticket is the cheaper plan. See Montserrat Monastery tickets for the full comparison.
Small Group, Private or Standard Montserrat Monastery Tours
Only the Mont Escape Tours trip states a small group on the listing. The other two do not give a size. I found no private Montserrat Monastery tour among these three. If you want a hike, the tours on my tickets page cover the hiking options from other operators.
How I’d Choose a Montserrat Monastery Tour
Best rated: Alan Nicol at $84, with the funicular included.
Cheapest: the bus trip at $77, knowing it has no reviews.
Seaside as well: Mont Escape Tours at $92 for Montserrat and Sitges.
Families: Alan Nicol, since a reviewer’s 5-year-old stayed engaged.
Short on money: the $28 entry ticket on my tickets page, if you will take the train.
I think so if you do not want to organise the train and funicular yourself. The three guided tours I compared cost $77 to $92 for 6 to 9 hours, against $28 for the entry ticket alone. The one with reviews and the highest rating, Alan Nicol at $84, scores 5.0 from 111 reviews.
How long is a Montserrat Monastery tour from Barcelona?+
The Alan Nicol tour takes 6.5 hours, the bus tour from Jessica De Lima Descovi takes 6 hours and the Sitges and Montserrat tour takes 9 hours. The bus tour's own timetable runs from 8:30 to 17:00, which is longer than the headline.
Does a Montserrat Monastery tour include the funicular?+
The Alan Nicol listing includes funicular tickets, transport and access to the Basilica. The other two do not list a funicular: the Sitges tour lists transport, entry fees and parking, and the bus tour lists a bus transfer and a guided history tour.
Where do Montserrat Monastery tours leave from in Barcelona?+
From the centre. Alan Nicol meets in front of Dolce and Gabbana opposite Casa Mila on Passeig de Gracia 95, the Sitges tour picks up at 8:00 AM at Passeig de Gracia 69 in front of a Benetton shop, and the bus tour meets a host with a red umbrella in front of the station on Avinguda del Marques de l'Argentera.
Can I see the Black Madonna on a Montserrat Monastery tour?+
Two of the listings say so. The Alan Nicol description names the throne of the Black Madonna and a reviewer saw the Black Madonna and explored the Basilica. The bus tour describes a 45-minute guided visit of the Basilica and Monastery, home of La Moreneta. Check the official site for queues.
Is it better to take a tour or go to Montserrat on my own?+
A tour removes the planning and adds a guide, but it costs more. The official tourist ticket for the Basilica area has been charged since May 2023 to most non-EU visitors, and the train or cable car adds to it. The tours bundle transport and entry, so I would compare the totals for your own plan.
