The Sistine Chapel is open 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, with final entry at 6 pm, and it is closed on Sundays except for one free morning a month. Those Sistine Chapel opening hours are the Vatican Museums’ hours, because the chapel is the last room of the museum route and I found no separate public entrance. This guide covers the hours by day, the closing dates, the rules inside, the best time to go and how to get there. If you want the tickets, my comparison of every Sistine Chapel ticket lists 10 options with prices.

Sistine Chapel Opening Hours

Today, Saturday 7 November 2026, the Sistine Chapel opening hours per Google Maps are 8 am to 8 pm. Across the week they look like this:

Day Hours per Google Maps
Monday 8 am to 8 pm
Tuesday 8 am to 8 pm
Wednesday 8 am to 8 pm
Thursday 8 am to 8 pm
Friday 8 am to 8 pm
Saturday 8 am to 8 pm
Sunday Closed

The official hours page is the one to trust, and it matches: Monday to Saturday 8 am to 8 pm with final entry at 6 pm. It adds that visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing, which in practice means the chapel is a place to reach well before the evening. The same page gives the last Sunday of each month as 9 am to 2 pm, with final entry at 12:30 pm.

Sistine Chapel Visiting Hours

The Sistine Chapel opening hours in practice depend on your ticket’s time slot as much as on the clock. The skip-the-line tickets I compared carry a reserved time, which narrows the Sistine Chapel opening hours to your slot. The $36 entrance ticket says to go to the entrance on Viale Vaticano and not to arrive outside your assigned slot, and the Travel Trust listing at $39 says late arrival or no-show means no entry and no refund. Once you are inside, the chapel is the last room of the route, so your own share of the Sistine Chapel opening hours is set by how long you spend in the galleries before it. The guided tours I compared last 2.5 to 3.5 hours in total, and the five-hour Tour Guy day adds the Basilica dome. For a morning in the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel opening hours are generous.

Sistine Chapel Opening Times

Sistine Chapel opening times also change on a few dates. The official page lists closures with no year printed, so confirm them on its 2026 to 2027 calendar before you plan around them. The Vatican Museums are closed on Sundays except the last of the month, on 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December.

The same page lists temporary closures that name the chapel directly: the Sistine Chapel is closed from 6 pm to 8 pm on 4 December and on 18 December, with last entrance at 5:30 pm. A separate closure of all sectors runs from 8 am to 9 am on 10 November. The page does not state the year, but these dates fall in the coming weeks, so the chapel’s opening times on those days are shorter than the usual week. The free last Sunday is cancelled when it falls on Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December.

Vatican Sistine Chapel Opening Hours

The Vatican Sistine Chapel opening hours (the same as the museums’) are not the same as those of St. Peter’s Basilica, which has its own schedule that I did not read. If you plan to visit both, check the official Vatican site for the Basilica on your date. One tour listing I compared warns that the Basilica can close at short notice, and on some Wednesday mornings for the Papal audience. That is one operator’s warning, but it is a good reason not to build a day that depends on the Basilica being open.

Sistine Chapel Closing Time

The Sistine Chapel closing time is 8 pm Monday to Saturday, but within the Sistine Chapel opening hours the useful number is 6 pm, when final entry stops. If you arrive with a ticket for the last slot of the day, you will have under two hours before the halls clear, and the official request to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing shortens that. On the free last Sunday the museums close at 2 pm, with final entry at 12:30 pm, and I would expect that morning to be busy, but the official site gives no figure and I won’t invent one.

Sistine Chapel Entrance

I found no separate public entrance to the chapel described. The official prices page says the Vatican Museums ticket entitles the visit to the museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued, so within the Sistine Chapel opening hours the Sistine Chapel entrance for a visitor is the museum entrance on Viale Vaticano, followed by security. After that the route runs through the galleries to the chapel. The meeting point depends on the product: Viale Vaticano 98 for the 1 City Tour listing, Viale Vaticano 104 for the City Lights Tours listing and Via Germanico 40 for the Travel Trust listing. Always read your own confirmation before leaving the hotel.

Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket

A Sistine Chapel entrance ticket is a Vatican Museums ticket. The official full ticket is 20 euros, or 25 euros with the 5 euro skip-the-line booking, and children under 7 enter free. The cheapest GetYourGuide option is the $36 entrance ticket, 4.5 stars from 160,078 reviews, and it is non-refundable. For the comparison of all the tickets, see Sistine Chapel tickets, or the Vatican Museums tickets page for the museum-wide view.

Best Time to Visit the Sistine Chapel

The official site publishes no crowd levels for the Sistine Chapel opening hours, so I won’t name a quiet day or hour. What I can say is arithmetic: the museums open at 8 am and take final entry at 6 pm, so the earliest slot of the Sistine Chapel opening hours protects you from the end-of-day squeeze. One tour I compared, the Tour Guy day at $133, starts with early-morning entry to St. Peter’s Basilica, and a reviewer called it well worth the extra money to get in early and avoid the crowds. That is about the Basilica, not the chapel.

Weather matters less indoors, but the queue and the walk are outside. Open-Meteo’s 2025 record for the Vatican gives this picture:

Month Sunrise Sunset Sunshine hours Rainy days
January 7:35 5:04 pm 6.2 12
March 6:22 6:16 pm 8.3 17
May 5:50 8:23 pm 12.7 11
June 5:34 8:47 pm 14 2
September 6:50 7:19 pm 11 7
November 7:00 4:49 pm 7.8 10

Source: Open-Meteo historical weather, 2025 data. June had 2 rainy days and 14 sunshine hours, and March had 17 rainy days.

How to Get to the Sistine Chapel

The nearest metro station in my data is Ottaviano, about 0.5 km from the Vatican Museums in a straight line, which is roughly an 8-minute walk by my estimate (distance multiplied by 1.3 at 4.8 km/h). Cipro is next, about 0.55 km away and 9 minutes on foot. Both are run by ATAC Roma, and I did not check the line names beyond what Google Maps lists. The chapel is then reached through the museum, so for the Sistine Chapel opening hours allow the full walk through the galleries on top of the walk from the station.

St. Peter’s Basilica is about 0.1 km from the chapel in a straight line, but visitors do not walk between them as the crow flies. The official site reminds visitors who continue to the Basilica not to leave luggage in the Vatican Museums, because the cloakroom is for the museum visit.

Sistine Chapel Dress Code

The dress code is the Vatican’s, and it is enforced at the museums, the chapel and the Basilica. Per the official visitor advice page, sleeveless or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted. Large bags, rucksacks and suitcases go in the free cloakroom. The chapel is the last room of the museums route, so you will already have passed the check by the time you reach it; the Sistine Chapel map shows where it sits. Wikidata gives the chapel’s height as 21 metres, which is a reason to wear something you can stand in for a while. Check the Sistine Chapel opening hours of 8 am to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday, before you go.

What to Know Before You Go

The official visitor advice sets the rules, and several apply to the chapel directly:

In the Sistine Chapel it is forbidden to take photographs or films with any type of electronic equipment.
— Vatican Museums, useful information for visitors

Tickets matter too. The official site says tickets cannot be refunded and are valid only on the day they are issued. Time to allow depends on the ticket, and on where the Sistine Chapel opening hours leave you. The guided tours I compared last 2.5 to 3.5 hours, and one reviewer of an unguided ticket wrote that they spent more than 3 hours in the museums. For the rest of the Rome trip, my home page lists the attractions I compare.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Sistine Chapel opening hours?

The Sistine Chapel opens with the Vatican Museums, 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, with final entry at 6 pm, according to the official site. Google Maps shows the same hours. The museums are closed on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, 9 am to 2 pm.

What time is the last entry to the Sistine Chapel?

Final entry to the Vatican Museums, and so to the chapel, is 6 pm Monday to Saturday and 12:30 pm on the free last Sunday. The official page also asks visitors to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing, so I would not plan to reach the chapel late.

Is the Sistine Chapel open on Sunday?

Only on the last Sunday of the month, from 9 am to 2 pm, with free entry. The official site lists exceptions: the free Sunday does not run when it falls on Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December.

Can you take photos in the Sistine Chapel?

No. The official visitor advice says it is forbidden to take photographs or films with any type of electronic equipment in the Sistine Chapel, that guards may ask you to delete them, and that mobile phones may not be used there. Photos for personal use are allowed elsewhere in the museums, without flash.

Do I need to be quiet in the Sistine Chapel?

Yes. The official site asks visitors to observe absolute silence out of respect for the sanctity of the place. Guided groups receive the art-historical explanation before they enter the chapel, then look in silence.

How do I get to the Sistine Chapel?

Through the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano. The chapel is the last room of the museum route. The nearest metro stop in my data is Ottaviano, about 0.5 km from the museum entrance in a straight line, roughly an 8-minute walk by my estimate.
