A Sistine Chapel tour is really a Vatican Museums tour that ends in the chapel, because the chapel is the last room of the museum route and has no separate public entrance. That is why the guide matters: the walk to Michelangelo’s ceiling passes thousands of objects, and a good guide decides which few to stop at. I compared four guided tours, from $66 to $84, each with skip-the-line entry, and set out where they meet, how long they run and what reviewers say. If you only want the entrance, my page on tickets for the Sistine Chapel covers every option.

What a Sistine Chapel Tour Adds Over a Plain Ticket

The official ticket is the Vatican Museums ticket. The official prices page lists the full ticket at 20 euros, plus 5 euros for the online booking, and says it covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued. A Sistine Chapel tour wraps that entrance in a guide, a meeting point and, on most listings, free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.

The most useful thing a guide does is give the explanation before the chapel. The official visitor advice says it is forbidden to take photographs or films with electronic equipment in the Sistine Chapel, and it asks for silence, per the useful tips page. Guides therefore explain the frescoes in the earlier rooms and then let you look in silence.

Sistine Chapel Tours With St. Peter’s Basilica

Two tours bundle the museums, the chapel and the Basilica in a single morning, and they are the ones to book if you want all three.

Made in Rome Tours is the one I would start with. It costs $66 for about 3 hours, and 11,985 reviews at 4.6 stars is the largest sample of any guided tour here. The tour office is in Borgo Pio, at Via Plauto 17A, and the listing asks you to arrive 20 minutes before your start time. It begins with a walk through the Borgo and along Via della Conciliazione to the square before entering the museums. The included list names the guide, guaranteed skip-the-line access, and access to the Museums, the chapel and the Basilica. Reviewers like the clear English and the guides who brought the history to life, and one would have liked less time in the museum and more with the guide in the Basilica.

“Excellent tour. Our guide Deborah was extremely knowledgeable and informative. We highly recommend this tour if you have never been inside the Vatican and Sistine Chapel.” – GetYourGuide review

Expert-Led Sistine Chapel Tour Through the Galleries

City Lights Tours is $82 for 2.5 to 3 hours, in English, with a licensed guide and headsets so you can hear. Staff check you in at Bar Da Paolo on Viale Vaticano 104. The route runs through the Museo Pio Clementino, the Gallery of the Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries, the Gallery of Maps and the Raphael Rooms before the chapel, with direct access to the Basilica if you select that option. That makes it the most explicit about the galleries on the way.

It scores 4.7 from 1,040 reviews, the best of the four. Reviewers say the guide paced the walk well, with time for photos and questions. One reviewer complained that it was very expensive and joked that if everyone has skip-the-line, no one does, which is a fair comment about the Vatican on a busy day.

Sistine Chapel Tour With Priority Entry and an Optional Guide

Habemus Tours costs $66 and is the one to read twice. It sells priority entry tickets to the Museums and the chapel, with assistance at its office on Via del Mascherino, and the guide is included only if you select that option. The languages are Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian and English. Arrive 30 minutes before the booked time, show your reservation code and the guide escorts you to the entrance. The stops run from the Cortile del Belvedere through the Gallery of Maps to the chapel and do not include the Basilica. The duration runs from 2.5 hours to a full day depending on the option.

It scores 4.4 from 1,498 reviews. A Spanish-language reviewer praised the guide and the person at the office, and an English reviewer said the tickets let them skip queues.

Other Guided Options Not Counted Here

Two further products on the site give you a guide but are classed as tickets, so they sit on my tickets page and I only name them here. One is the Towns of Italy small-group tour at $85, which lists a group of at most 8, 3 to 3.5 hours and an optional Basilica visit. The other is the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica tour with a dome climb at $133, which runs 5 hours with an English-speaking guide and early morning Basilica entry. They are the only listings in my data that state a small group or a dome climb.

Do Reviewers Agree on Sistine Chapel Tours?

Mostly yes. Across the review texts I read, the guide gets the praise: clear English, patience with questions and the ability to make the museums easier to follow. The complaints are small and practical, including the price, the time in the museum compared with the time with the guide and the fact that the crowd is large however you enter.

Absolutely brilliant tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel.
— GetYourGuide reviewer

That pattern suggests that on any Sistine Chapel tour the guide matters more than the operator. A big review sample is the best protection I can offer against a poor draw.

Guided Tour or Ticket Only?

The plain GetYourGuide entrance ticket costs $36 and covers the museums and the chapel, and a priority-entry ticket costs $39. The cheapest guided Sistine Chapel tour is $66, so the guide costs about $27 to $30 more by that comparison. The official ticket is 25 euros with the online booking. If you have been to the Vatican before and know what you want to see, the plain entrance is enough. If it is your first visit, I would book a Sistine Chapel tour and pay for the guide, since the museums are the part that wears people out. My page on Sistine Chapel tickets shows the cheaper options.

How I’d Choose a Sistine Chapel Tour

Check the days and the last entry in my Sistine Chapel opening hours guide, since the Vatican Museums are closed on most Sundays. The Sistine Chapel map shows what a route passes on the way in, and the Sistine Chapel facts and history page gives the background. To compare entry options, the full list of Sistine Chapel tickets is the next stop, and the home page lists the other attractions I cover.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Sistine Chapel tour worth it?

I think so for a first visit, because the chapel is the last room of a very long museum route. The most-reviewed tour, Made in Rome Tours at $66, has 4.6 stars from 11,985 reviews, and reviewers praise guides who made the Vatican Museums easier to follow. The official full ticket is 25 euros online, so the guide adds the explanation and the escort.

How long is a Sistine Chapel tour?

From 2.5 to 3 hours in most of the listings I compared. Maya Tours and Habemus Tours list 2.5 hours, City Lights Tours 2.5 to 3 hours and Made in Rome Tours 3 hours. Habemus Tours also shows a full-day option, so read the option name.

Does a Sistine Chapel tour include St. Peter's Basilica?

Three of the four can. Made in Rome Tours and Maya Tours list St. Peter's Basilica as included, and City Lights Tours lists direct access to the Basilica if you select that option. Habemus Tours stops at the chapel. Maya Tours warns the Basilica can close at short notice.

Can I take photos on a Sistine Chapel tour?

Not in the chapel itself. The official visitor advice says photographs and films with any type of electronic equipment are forbidden in the Sistine Chapel, and guards may ask you to delete them. Photos for personal use are allowed elsewhere in the museums, without flash.

Where does a Sistine Chapel tour meet?

Away from the museum entrance. Made in Rome Tours meets at Via Plauto 17A in Borgo Pio, Maya Tours at Via Germanico 16, City Lights Tours at Bar Da Paolo on Viale Vaticano 104 and Habemus Tours at Via del Mascherino 37 to 41. Arrive 10 to 30 minutes early, as each listing asks.

Are Sistine Chapel tours open on Sundays?

Only on the last Sunday of the month. The official site lists the Vatican Museums as closed on other Sundays, and the free last Sunday runs from 9 am to 2 pm with final entry at 12:30 pm. Tours that run on that day will be busy.
