A Colosseum night tour is a different visit from the daytime one: fewer people, softer light and a shorter window to see it all. The Colosseum night tour is also the one visit where timing, not the ticket, is the main decision. There are two ways to do it. The official park runs its own guided evening visit, and two tours on GetYourGuide are built around sunset and the evening. I compared both, and this page tells you what each costs, what changes after the day crowds leave, and which I would book. For the plain daytime options, see my Colosseum tickets page.

What Counts as a Colosseum Night Tour

The phrase covers three different things, and the difference matters when you pay.

The first is the official evening visit. The Colosseum page on colosseo.it lists “Una Notte al Colosseo”, a guided evening visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 pm to 11 pm, with last entry at 9:50 pm. The page does not say which months it covers or what it costs, and I could not confirm either, so check the date and price on the site before you plan around it.

The second is a sunset tour, which is a late-day visit rather than a night one. The third is an evening tour that runs into the dusk. Both GetYourGuide tours are run by private operators, not by the park, and in winter the Colosseum itself closes at 4:30 pm, per Google Maps and the official hours page. That means a winter “night” tour cannot be after dark inside. Open-Meteo gives sunset in Rome at 4:39 pm in December, so a winter evening tour is a dusk tour.

The Two Colosseum Night Tour Listings

The two listings below are the only ones in my data that fit a Colosseum night tour, so I describe each in full.

Sunset tour with optional interior access

This is the cheapest Colosseum tour I found, at $24, for 1 to 1.5 hours. The listing sells the golden hour, with a guide in nine languages including English, German, French, Italian and Arabic. Read the options carefully. The tour with entry skips the ticket office queue, and the listing says the exterior tour does not visit the Colosseum inside and does not include the entry ticket. The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are not included either. It is non-refundable.

The listing says to arrive 20 minutes before the start, that there is no skip the line for the mandatory security check, and that you need a passport or ID card. Luggage and large bags, strollers and glass objects are not allowed.

“Wonderful! Our guide was so knowledgeable and caring! We learned so much and were taken care of so well!” – GetYourGuide review

Reviewers like the light and the quiet. One wrote that the sunlight over the Colosseum as it set was stunning and that the crowds left them almost alone. The recurring complaint is the clock: because you enter late, the Colosseum closes as you finish.

Just a little stressful being pushed out at closing time.

City Wonders evening tour

The City Wonders evening tour costs $66 and lasts 3 hours with an English-speaking guide. You choose a group of 10, 15 or 25, and the listing includes the reserved Colosseum entrance, the standard 18 euro ticket, and the 24 euro arena ticket if you pick that option. The walk starts outside, past the Roman Forum along Via dei Fori Imperiali, then goes inside the Colosseum to explore several levels. Stops in the listing include the arena floor, the attic on floors 3 to 5 and Palatine Hill. The listing says to check availability for starting times, so I cannot tell you when it starts. It can be cancelled free up to 4 days ahead.

“Hisam was amazing - a really great tour guide with lots of knowledge and he was super engaging with the group. I would absolutely recommend this tour with him.” – GetYourGuide review

The meeting point changes on 1 January 2027. Until 31 December 2026 the group meets at Largo Gaetana Agnesi, above the Colosseo metro station. From 1 January 2027 it is the Belvedere Cederna viewpoint at Via dei Fori Imperiali 43. Reviewers praise guides by name for pacing and photos, and a few were confused about the meeting spot even though the operator answered promptly.

What Changes on a Colosseum Night Tour

Several things change once the day crowds leave, and a Colosseum night tour is built around them. Light is the obvious change. The listing for the sunset tour promises the golden hour, and the evening tour promises the city lights as they begin to glow. Wikipedia notes that the Colosseum is illuminated at night, and that the city changes the colour from white to gold when a death sentence is commuted somewhere in the world, per Wikipedia. I did not find a source that says whether the lights are on during the tours.

Crowds are the second. Two reviewers say an evening visit was quieter than daytime, and the sunset listing’s own reviewer summary says late entry brings calmer crowds. The official site publishes no crowd figures, so I will not give you numbers.

Areas are the third, and the one I cannot answer fully. The evening tour’s stop list includes the arena floor and the attic, but the official site does not say which areas are open on the night visit. If a specific area matters to you, such as the arena floor, choose a listing that names it in the option.

Sunset Times by Month for a Colosseum Night Tour

This table is from Open-Meteo’s 2025 record for Rome, so use it as a guide to the season and not as a forecast.

Month Sunset Sunshine hours Rainy days
January 5:03 pm 6.4 11
March 6:16 pm 8.4 15
May 8:23 pm 12.7 8
June 8:46 pm 14 3
August 8:09 pm 12.6 9
October 6:28 pm 9.4 9
November 4:49 pm 7.9 10
December 4:39 pm 6.9 8

Source: Open-Meteo historical weather. The practical reading: from May to August the sun sets after 8 pm, which is after the Colosseum’s winter closing time by a long way, so a summer sunset tour is a true evening visit if the hours allow it. From November to January sunset comes before 5:10 pm, which makes the “sunset” tour a late-afternoon one. Check the hours of your date in my Colosseum opening hours guide.

Colosseum Night Tour or Daytime Tour?

Choose a Colosseum night tour if you care about atmosphere and photos and can accept a tighter schedule. Choose a daytime tour if you want the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in the same visit. My comparison of every Colosseum tour covers those daytime options, from $44 for the Forum and Palatine walk to $70 for the arena tour in 14 languages. The sunset tour excludes the Forum and Palatine, and the evening tour does not make it a full Forum visit, so a Colosseum night tour is a Colosseum-focused visit and not a full day of Roman ruins.

If you want to see what is inside before you book, my Colosseum map shows the route, and the Colosseum history page explains what the guide will point at.

How I’d Choose a Colosseum Night Tour

Whichever Colosseum night tour you pick, bring photo ID, because the listings and the official site both require it. Then compare it with the rest of my Colosseum tickets guide before you book, and the home page lists the other attractions I compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Colosseum night tour?

Yes, in two forms. The official site lists Una Notte al Colosseo, a guided evening visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 pm to 11 pm with last entry at 9:50 pm. On GetYourGuide I found a sunset tour at $24 and an evening tour at $66 that start in the late afternoon and early evening, so check the start time for your date.

How much is a Colosseum night tour?

The two tours I compared cost $24 for the sunset tour and $66 for the City Wonders evening tour. The cheaper one is non-refundable and the Colosseum entry applies only if you pick that option. I did not find the price of the official night visit on the page I read, so check colosseo.it.

How long does a Colosseum night tour take?

The sunset tour runs 1 to 1.5 hours and the City Wonders evening tour about 3 hours, per the listings. The official site does not state a length for its night visit on the page I read, only the 8 pm to 11 pm window.

Is the Colosseum less crowded in the evening?

Reviewers of both tours say so. One sunset reviewer wrote that the crowds left them almost alone, and an evening reviewer called it less busy than in the day time. The official site publishes no crowd data, so treat this as reviewer experience, not a guarantee.

Can you go inside the Colosseum at night?

Yes, on the official Tuesday and Thursday night visit and on tours that include entry. The sunset tour has an exterior-only option that does not go inside, so read which option you are booking.
