The Colosseum is open from 8:30 am, and Google Maps lists 4:30 pm as closing every day of the week. For the winter period the official site gives last entry at 3:30 pm, so the Colosseum opening hours leave a window of about seven hours. This guide covers the Colosseum opening hours by day, the best time to go, how to get there and the rules at the gate. If you want the tickets, my full comparison of Colosseum tickets lists all 10 options with prices.

The official Colosseum opening hours sit on the hours and tickets page is the one to trust. For 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027 it shows the Colosseum opening at 8:30, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill at 9:00, and the archaeological park running from 8:30 to 4:30 pm with last entry at 3:30 pm. The same page lists closures on 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. It did not show hours for the other seasons when I read it, and the closing time moves through the year, so check the date you want. Google and the official page agree for this winter period.
Colosseum Opening Hours Rome
The Colosseum hours in Rome are the same whether you search for them as hours of operation or opening times, but two things catch people out. The first is that the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill open half an hour later than the Colosseum, at 9:00 in the winter period, so a ticket that bundles all three sets your morning. The second is that entry runs on a timed slot, so the opening time is only the start of the window.
The official site also runs a night visit, “Una Notte al Colosseo”, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 pm to 11 pm, with last entry at 9:50 pm, per the Colosseum page on colosseo.it. I would check the season on the site before relying on it, because the page did not say which months it covers.
Colosseum Opening Hours Sunday
The Colosseum opening hours on a Sunday follow the same Google Maps hours as the rest of the week, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The thing that changes on a Sunday is the price. Per the official hours page, the first Sunday of the month is a free entry day, and the page also lists free dates on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. Those days draw crowds, a timed slot is still mandatory, and tickets are named for the visitor, so I would plan for queues and book the slot in advance. The Domus Aurea, which sits outside the Colosseum ticket, is closed on the first Sunday of every month, the same page says.
Best Time to Visit Colosseum Rome
The best time to visit the Colosseum is first thing in the morning, within the Colosseum opening hours, or the last slots of the day, and I can say that from the opening hours more than from crowd data. The first entry is 8:30, the last in winter is 3:30 pm, and the official page does not publish crowd levels, so I will not invent quiet days. What the data does show is how the day changes with the seasons.
Open-Meteo’s 2025 weather record for Rome gives sunset times of 4:39 pm in December and 8:46 pm in June, and rainy days per month from 3 in June to 15 in March. That matters because the Colosseum is largely open to the air.
Two products use the light. The sunset tour at $24 lasts 1 to 1.5 hours, and the City Wonders evening tour at $66 runs for 3 hours with a stop list that includes the arena floor and the attic. In the short winter days, the sunset arrives before the 4:30 pm closing, which is why a sunset tour behaves differently by season. For the best time to visit the Colosseum in Rome, I’d pick a morning in spring or autumn, when the sunshine hours are neither too short nor too hot, and book the earliest slot.
Colosseum Hours of Operation
The Colosseum hours of operation reach beyond the building, and the Colosseum opening hours are not the only ones that matter. The Roman Forum is listed on Google Maps as open 9 am to 4:30 pm, and the archaeological park office on Piazza Santa Maria Nova as 8:30 am to 7:15 pm. These are different listings with different purposes, and the park listing does not mean the Colosseum is open that late. For entry I’d use the Colosseum’s own hours.
How to Get to the Colosseum
The nearest station is Colosseo, on the Metro line B, and Google Maps puts it about 150 m from the Colosseum in a straight line, roughly a 3-minute walk by my estimate (straight-line distance multiplied by 1.3 at 4.8 km/h). The station is operated by ATAC Roma. The Arch of Constantine is a 2-minute walk, and the Roman Forum about 9 minutes.
Several tours meet at the station itself. The City Walkers tour meets at Largo Gaetana Agnesi, 5, on the upper level of the Colosseo metro station, in front of the entrance to the primary school. The Ivo Tours products meet on Via delle Terme di Tito, 93, which is the Enjoy Rome agency, a short walk away. Read the meeting point in your confirmation, because several listings change it by option.
Colosseum Hours Rome: Entrances
The Colosseum address is Piazza del Colosseo, 1, 00184 Rome. Your timed slot decides when you go in, inside the Colosseum opening hours. With a tour, the guide meets you first and takes you to the entrance, which is why a guided entry saves guessing at the gates. The official ticketing site is ticketing.colosseo.it.

“Valeria was an excellent guide. We’ve been in Europe for 6 weeks and undertaken several guided tours and he was the best guide we’ve had. Knowledgeable and passionate about his subject.” – GetYourGuide review
The Colosseum has a dress rule, though it is about decorum, not fashion. The park’s visiting guidelines require clothing appropriate to the formal setting of the site and prohibit ceremonial dresses, masks, period costumes and other fancy dress. The same page advises appropriate footwear and says high heels and flip-flops are not recommended, because the paths and steps are steep and uneven. Shoulders and knees are not mentioned on the page I read, so I would not state a rule that the official site does not.
Colosseum Audio Guide
The official MyColosseum app is free and has interactive audio guides in Italian and English that follow you along the route, including the underground and the attic, per colosseo.it. A second official app, Y&Co, offers audio-video guides in nine languages, a children’s route and routes for blind and deaf visitors. If you prefer a paid product, the Ivo Tours entry with a digital audio guide app is $25 on GetYourGuide, and for a live person I compare every guided option on my Colosseum tours page.
Things to Do Near the Colosseum
The Arch of Constantine is about a 2-minute walk away, the Roman Forum about 9 minutes and the archaeological park office about 8, using the same walking estimate as above. If your Colosseum opening hours leave you a free afternoon, my Colosseum map shows the sights around it, and the Colosseum history page explains what you are looking at. For a different light on the same building, see the Colosseum night tour options.
What to Know Before You Go
Per the official hours page, every ticket is named for the visitor, you must show an ID document at the entrances, and a timed slot is mandatory. Name changes are allowed once, in specific cases, and must be requested by midnight on the seventh day before the visit. Tickets go on sale 30 days before the visit date.
From the tour listings I compared, a few other points come up. Some tours leave out food and drinks, tips and transport. The arena floor and underground are not part of the standard ticket. One reviewer of the express tour mentioned a group delayed because a member forgot their ID. I did not find the bag rules on the pages I read, so check the official site for what you can carry in. Plan your day around the Colosseum opening hours: allow about an hour for the Colosseum alone and 2.5 to 3 hours if the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are included.
Once you know the Colosseum opening hours, the next choice is the ticket. Every Colosseum ticket I compared is explained there, with who each is for, and the home page lists the other attractions I compare.
One practical note on timing: because a slot is mandatory, arriving early does not get you in sooner, but it does give you time for the security check and for finding your meeting point. On tours that meet at the Colosseo station, I would aim to be there 15 minutes before the start, since the listings say the guide coordinator waits at a fixed spot and the group leaves on time. That 15-minute buffer is my own rule of thumb, not an official figure. If you arrive late, ask the operator what happens, because the cancellation terms differ: the sunset tour is non-refundable, while most guided tours offer free cancellation from 24 hours to 7 days before.
