A Colosseum tour comes down to one trade: you pay more than the plain entry, and in return someone explains what you are looking at. I compared nine guided Colosseum tours, from $24 to $70, and each one includes the entry ticket. This page sets them side by side, with the route, group size, languages, meeting point and what reviewers say. If you only want the entry, my guide to tickets for the Colosseum covers every option.

Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill Guided Tour
A plain ticket lets you walk in at your slot and work out the building on your own. A guided Colosseum tour adds three things: a licensed guide, a person who knows where to queue, and, on most tours, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill in one walk. The official site describes its standard Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket as valid for 24 hours with a single access to the Colosseum, per the Colosseum page on colosseo.it. A tour wraps that same ticket in a route.
What the guide is not: a shortcut past the security check or past the timed slot. The official site says tickets are named and a timed slot is mandatory, so your Colosseum tour starts at the slot that the operator booked. What the guide does remove is guesswork about which gate to use.
Standard Group Tours With the Forum and Palatine Hill
Four of the Colosseum tours follow the same shape: meet the guide, enter the Colosseum, then walk down to the Roman Forum and up Palatine Hill.
Crown Tours is the one I would start with, because 94,213 reviews at 4.8 is the biggest sample of any Colosseum tour here. It costs $55, takes about 2.5 hours, comes with headsets and runs in English, Italian, Portuguese, German, French and Spanish. The listing names two meeting points, Largo Gaetana Agnesi and Via della Polveriera 13, and which one you get depends on the option. Cancellation is free up to 3 days ahead.

“Valeria was an excellent guide. We’ve been in Europe for 6 weeks and undertaken several guided tours and he was the best guide we’ve had. Knowledgeable and passionate about his subject.” – GetYourGuide review
Rutas Romanas is $7 cheaper at $48 and has free cancellation up to 7 days ahead, the longest window in this group. It is a live licensed-guide tour with headsets in six languages, and the listing says the arena floor and the underground are included only if the option’s title says so. The meeting point changes with the option, so I would read the confirmation email twice.

“Tour with Alice was amazing, very knowledgeable & good sense of humour” – GetYourGuide review
City Walkers costs $56 for about one hour, and it is the shortest tour in this group. The itinerary runs Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, then back to the Colosseum. The meeting point is described precisely: Largo Gaetana Agnesi 5, on the upper level of the Colosseo metro station, in front of the primary school entrance, with staff in light blue uniforms. Languages are English, Spanish, German and French. The not-included list says arena access exists only on the English group tour with arena access, and the underground is not covered.

“A great option if you’d like some great information and movement around the big lines for the colosseum and palatine hill.” – GetYourGuide review
City Wonders is $66 for about 1.5 hours and is the one in this group that also lists the reservation fee: the Colosseum entrance ticket at 18 euros, or 24 euros with arena access, plus a 2 euro fee. The group is English only. The meeting point moves in the new year: until 31 December 2026 it is Largo Gaetana Agnesi, and from 1 January 2027 it is the Belvedere Cederna viewpoint on Via dei Fori Imperiali 43.

“I really enjoyed the tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made the tour very enjoyable!” – GetYourGuide review
The arena floor is the part most people want a Colosseum tour for. The official site sells the arena on its own as a 20-minute access, and the full experience tickets as valid for 2 consecutive days. The underground and the attic have their own official tickets too, per colosseo.it, and the tours below sell those areas as options.
Ivo Tours is one of the two cheapest arena-floor tours at $44, for 2.5 to 3 hours. It has the most detailed route of any Colosseum tour here: the Colosseum and arena floor, then the Roman Forum, the Arch of Titus, the House of the Vestals, the Basilica of Maxentius and the Temple of Antoninus Pius and Faustina, then Palatine Hill and the Arch of Constantine. Ten languages are offered and the group meets at Via delle Terme di Tito 93. The underground floor is not included. Reviewers single out guides who made the ruins vivid, and one liked the music played as the group reached the arena floor.

Tour Italy LTD is the most expensive Colosseum tour at $70, and the reason to pay is language. It runs in 14 languages, including Greek, Hindi, Serbian, Urdu, Arabic and Japanese, with four meeting points on Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via dei Serpenti. The listing mentions the partly rebuilt arena floor, the senators’ seats and a trap door where animals were released. Cancellation is free up to 7 days ahead.

Trip in Art is the Colosseum tour I would look at for the underground (Rutas Romanas also lists it as an option, with the arena, in its title). It sells four options: a tour with no arena, an arena tour, an underground and arena experience, and an audio experience. The groups are small, up to 12, and the underground option is capped at 6. The listing price starts at $44 and I could not confirm the price of the underground option itself. The listing says the guided Forum and Palatine visit is not part of options 1, 2 and 4. One reviewer says the start was delayed because someone forgot their ID, so keep yours in your pocket.

“Great guide. Brought the colosseum alive, and even offered to take our picture. Very clear English and a catching smile. Kind and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this tour.” – GetYourGuide review
Two Colosseum tours are built around the time of day. I cover them in detail on my Colosseum night tour page, so here is the short version.
The sunset tour is $24, the cheapest of the nine, for 1 to 1.5 hours. It is non-refundable, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are not included and the Colosseum entry applies only if you pick that option. A reviewer called the guide knowledgeable but said it was stressful to be pushed out at closing time.

“Hisam was amazing - a really great tour guide with lots of knowledge and he was super engaging with the group. I would absolutely recommend this tour with him.” – GetYourGuide review
On reviews, yes. In the 20 review texts I read for each tour, the praise goes to the guide: knowledge, humour, pace and patience with questions. Complaints are small and practical: City Walkers headsets that “need some work”, a delayed start because of a forgotten ID, and the closing-time rush on the sunset tour.
“Great guide. Brought the colosseum alive, and even offered to take our picture.”
— GetYourGuide reviewer
That pattern tells me the guide matters more than the operator’s name. I cannot choose your guide, but I can say which tours have the most reviews, and the most reviews give the least random result.
Guided Colosseum Tour or Ticket Only?
The one ticket-only product in my comparison is the Ivo Tours entry with an audio guide app, at $25. The cheapest guided tour that includes the Forum and Palatine is $44, which means the guide costs about $19 more. The difference is real, since the audio guide and the Colosseum ticket do not give you a person to ask. If you like to read as you walk and your slot is fixed, the ticket-only entry is fine. The official site also offers free interactive audio guides in Italian and English in its MyColosseum app, per colosseo.it, which is worth knowing before you pay for an audio product.
If you want that entry without a guide, my page on Colosseum tickets explains which ticket opens which area. The official tickets are sold at ticketing.colosseo.it.
Small Group, Private or Standard Colosseum Tours
The listings show only a small part of this split. Group size is stated for just two tours: Trip in Art (up to 12, or 6 for the underground) and the City Wonders evening tour (10, 15 or 25 by your choice). I did not find a private Colosseum tour among the nine, so I cannot compare one. If you want a small group, those two are the ones that say so in writing; for the rest, ask the operator.
How I’d Choose a Colosseum Tour
First visit: Crown Tours at $55 or Rutas Romanas at $48. They are the most reviewed and the Forum and Palatine are included.
Short on time: City Walkers at $56 for about an hour.
Arena floor: Ivo Tours at $44 is the cheapest, and Tour Italy at $70 if you need a rare language.
Underground: Trip in Art, with Rutas Romanas as the other listing that offers it.
Cheapest: the sunset tour at $24, knowing it is non-refundable and Colosseum-only.
Evenings: City Wonders at $66.
Before you book, check the opening-hours page on Colosseum opening hours, because the last slots vary by season. My Colosseum map shows what each tour reaches inside, and the Colosseum history page gives the background your guide will not have time for. When you are ready to pick, the full list of Colosseum tickets is the place to go, and the home page lists the other attractions I compare.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Colosseum tour worth it?+
I think so if you want the building explained. The Colosseum tour listings I compared all include the entry ticket, so the guide costs the gap between a $25 audio-guide entry and a guided price of $44 to $70. The most-reviewed tour, Crown Tours at $55, has 4.8 stars from 94,213 reviews, and reviewers praise the guides far more than anything else.
How long is a Colosseum tour?+
From about 1 hour for the express and sunset tours to 3 hours for the evening and arena tours. The tours that add the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill run 2.5 to 3 hours in the listings. The Colosseum part alone is roughly an hour of that.
Does a Colosseum tour include the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill?+
Most do. Eight of the nine tours I compared name the Forum and Palatine Hill, and the sunset tour does not: it lists the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill as not included. Read the title and the included list before you book.
Which Colosseum tour includes the arena floor?+
The arena floor is an option on Crown Tours, Rutas Romanas, Tour Italy, Ivo Tours, City Wonders and Trip in Art. The underground is listed as an option by Rutas Romanas and Trip in Art, and Trip in Art caps that option at 6 people. The City Walkers listing says its arena access exists only on its English arena-access group tour.
Do I need to book a Colosseum tour in advance?+
Yes, I would. The official site says a timed slot is mandatory and tickets are named and checked against ID, and tour operators work from the same limited slots. The official tickets go on sale 30 days ahead, so pick your date early.
Can I buy a Colosseum tour at the gate?+
I would not plan on it. Every tour here is booked online with a fixed start time and a meeting point away from the gate. If you turn up without a booking, check the official site first, as a timed slot is mandatory for entry.
