The Circus Maximus is open all the time as a public space, according to the Rome tourism board, but the fenced archaeological area and the Circo Maximo Experience run on seasonal hours. For the period from 1 October to 31 December the official experience site shows 10:00 to 16:00, with last entry at 14:50. This guide covers the Circus Maximus opening hours (and the Circus Maximus opening hours of the experience), the entrance, events, how long to allow and the best time to go. If you want the paid options, my comparison of Circus Maximus tickets lists 10 of them with prices.

Circus Maximus Opening Hours

These Circus Maximus opening hours come from two official pages. Google Maps shows no weekly hours for the Circus Maximus in my data, so I cannot give you its opening hours table. What I can give you is two official statements. The Rome tourism board’s page for the Circus Maximus lists the site as always open. The Circo Maximo Experience site lists seasonal hours, shown below. The page gives dates without a year, so confirm them for 2026 before you plan around a time.

Period Hours Last entry
2 January to 31 May 10:00 to 16:00 14:50
2 June to 31 July 17:00 to 21:00 19:50
1 to 9 August 17:30 to 20:30 19:20
11 to 23 August 17:00 to 20:00 18:50
25 August to 13 September 16:30 to 19:30 18:20
15 to 30 September 16:00 to 19:00 17:50
1 October to 31 December 10:00 to 16:00 14:50
24 and 31 December 10:00 to 14:00 12:35

Entries run every 15 minutes. The experience is closed on Mondays, 1 May and 25 December, and the same page says the multimedia visit cannot take place in the rain. If your plan is only to walk the track, the Circus Maximus opening hours above do not apply to you.

Circus Maximus Opening Times

The difference between the open field and the experience is the thing to remember when you ask about Circus Maximus opening times. The field is a park you can enter at any hour the tourism board’s page implies, while the experience has a start slot every 15 minutes inside the window above. Summer shifts the window to late afternoon and evening, from 17:00 in June and July, which is when the heat has eased. Winter keeps it in the middle of the day. In November the Circus Maximus opening times are 10:00 to 16:00, with the last group at 14:50.

Circus Maximus Opening

When people search for the Circus Maximus opening hours or the opening, they often mean the experience opening for a season. The tourism board’s page for the experience states it runs from 1 January to 31 December 2026, so it is open through the year, apart from the closing days above. I did not find a published reopening date after any pause, and the board points to the official site for the latest notices, so check the notices page before you travel.

Circus Maximus Entrance

The Circus Maximus opening hours matter at the entrance only for the experience desk. There is no entrance to pass through for the open valley, since the grass is a public space, and the paid entrance is on Viale Aventino. The experience’s own site gives the box office there, and the headsets are collected at the same desk. Staff ask for an original ID card or passport as a deposit for the headset, and children under 14 can use the headsets only with an adult who signs a waiver. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals get no refund or new slot.

The GetYourGuide products use other meeting points. The $25 Voyager VR/AR visit checks in at the Circo Maximo Experience desk on Viale Aventino, the $44 Roma Eterna game meets at Via di San Gregorio and Via dei Cerchi, and the $56 Golden Ticket combo meets near Via del Circo Massimo 5A. Read your voucher, because three different corners of the same field are in use. For the full comparison go back to every Circus Maximus ticket I compared.

Circus Maximus Events

The Circus Maximus is a public park used for large events, per Wikipedia, which lists concerts, meetings and celebrations, including celebrations after Italy’s win in the 2006 World Cup. On event days parts of the valley may be fenced, so the open field is not always open to walk. I found no official calendar, so check the Rome tourism board or the promoter’s page for the date you want. GetYourGuide does not sell concert tickets for it.

How Long Does the Circus Maximus Take

Allow 20 to 30 minutes to walk the length of the track, which Wikipedia gives as about 621 m. The official experience adds about 40 minutes. The guided Baths of Caracalla and Circus tours on GetYourGuide run 1.5 to 2.5 hours, because most of that time is spent in the Baths. A half day is the most the Circus alone deserves, and most people need much less. Fit the visit inside the Circus Maximus opening hours of any paid part, and use the free field as the flexible piece of the day.

Best Time to Visit the Circus Maximus

I have no official statement on the quietest times for the open field, so this section uses what the data supports. The experience runs in small groups, which the tourism board describes as limited, so the slot you pick matters more than the crowd. In summer the 17:00 start avoids the middle of the day. Open-Meteo weather data for Rome in 2025 shows June with 3 rainy days and 14 sunshine hours a day, while March had 15 rainy days. Rain stops the experience, so a dry month matters if you booked the headset visit.

Sunset times from the same data run from about 16:49 in November to 20:46 in June, which helps if you want the track in evening light. I did not find an official statement on night access to the field.

“You learn a lot about the history of Circus Maximus, with a lot of visualation (of course haha), which makes everything more detailed and amazing.” – GetYourGuide review

How to Get to the Circus Maximus

The nearest station is Circo Massimo on metro line B, about 300 m from the middle of the track, roughly 5 minutes’ walk by my estimate (straight line times 1.3 at 4.8 km/h). The official site lists the Aventino bus stop for Circo Massimo as the nearest bus stop. Colosseo station, also on line B, is about 13 minutes away, and the Colosseum itself about 12. For line information check ATAC, Rome’s transit operator.

From the Roman Forum the Circus is about 11 minutes on foot, so the two fit one morning. My Roman Forum tickets page compares the options there.

What to Know Before You Go

Planning around the Circus Maximus opening hours is easy, since the field has no timetable. The open field has little shade and no visible structures beyond the curve of the track, so bring water in summer. Wikipedia notes the original track is about six metres below the modern surface, so do not expect standing walls. For the VR visit the official site recommends booking in advance, and the operator warns it is not recommended for guests with strong photosensitivity, vertigo or severe vision issues. Date changes and refunds are given only for technical or weather cancellations, requested by email within 15 days, per the official page. Children under 6 are free, and disabled visitors plus one companion are free.

Practical Tips for a Short Visit

Pair the Circus with the Colosseum side of town: the Arch of Constantine is about 10 minutes away on foot by my estimate, and the Colosseum about 12, so a morning can cover all three. Check the Circus Maximus opening hours of the experience first, and keep the Circus Maximus opening hours in mind when you set the order of the day, because it is the only part with fixed slots. Wear shoes for uneven ground, since the field is grass and gravel. If you plan to book the headset visit, choose a dry day, because the operator does not run it in the rain, and keep your ID in your pocket for the deposit.

For tickets and tours, my full comparison of Circus Maximus tickets sets the $25 VR/AR visit against the guided Baths of Caracalla combos. For the rest of Rome, start from the home page.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Circus Maximus opening hours?

The open valley is listed as always open by the Rome tourism board. The fenced area with the Circo Maximo Experience has seasonal hours: on the official site, the period from 1 October to 31 December shows 10:00 to 16:00 with last entry at 14:50, but that page gives no year, so check it for your date.

Is the Circus Maximus closed on any days?

Per the official experience site, the experience is closed on Mondays, 1 May and 25 December, and it does not run in the rain. The open grass valley is not described as closing. Because the page gives no year, confirm the closing days before you travel.

Yes. Wikipedia describes the grounds as a large public park often used for concerts, meetings and celebrations. I did not find an official event calendar, so check the Rome tourism board for dates.
